Free Japan Data SIM 500 MB/7 or 15 Days (Must Register before Departure)

860

A relative told me about this page as I'll be travelling to Japan soon on the Jetstar return for free deal (thanks OzB!).

There are two options:

1. Trip Free 500 MB, 7 Days

http://trip-free.com/service

You must register at least 10 days before departure. You'll get 500 MB for free, and can earn more data by filling out a survey (300 MB), book restaurants or activities (100 MB). SIM cards can be picked up at the airport or delivered to your hotel. Note that the SIM must be returned in an envelope prior to returning or get charged the deposit (Japan has this law restricting foreigners from purchasing SIM cards so a workaround is for telcos to "rent" SIM cards out. Data-only SIMs are exempt from this restriction). More data can be purchased.

2. WAmazing 500 MB, 15 days

https://tw.wamazing.com/#sim

Site and app are in Mandarin so you need some OzB April Fools skills. Register before departure — it didn't say the minimum number of days before you leave. SIM can be picked up at the airport. You must download the app (Taiwan/HK/China Apple Store) and register through there. Again, more data can be purchased. Share on Facebook through the app to get another 500 MB. Didn't say anything about returning the SIM.

Apparently you get unlimited data if you book your hotel through the app. Haven't tried it yet.

Neither says anything about speeds, but I assume it'll be 3G/4G.

ENJOY!

500mb free is pretty sweet, but if you're using maps, translate, hyperdia, and social media you'll smash that in a day.
I'm just coming back from a trip where I got this :
      http://japan-wireless.com/product?/products.html#mobile%20wi…
It's not a sale or anything, but I got the data only sim with 500mb a day, and most days used around 300-400.

So hopefully you can get unlimited data :D

    Terms of Service
    Article 15 Prohibited Acts
… Any act of using the Service in a manner giving excessive load to the server managed by any third party or hindering such management; …

    careful not to OzBargain it!

  • this sounds like a Data-only SIMs but not exempt from the restriction?

  • When does this expire?

    • Both deals should be ongoing as far as I'm aware.

  • Damn, we leave in 8 days

    • I'll see you there.

  • Most hotel give you a free tablet connected with wifi and a free mobile phone with data. Problem is these are in Japanese language and do not substitute your own device. This deal is worth free $20 value IMO. Going by the current data only SIM prices in Japan

  • Amazing deal, I'm going to japan for exact 15 days and I will buy a pricy sim card if I didn't see this deal. Also if you book any room via second deal it will give you unlimited data sim card, doesn't matter how many night or guest.

  • Whats the catch? I assume you would want to use it with a VPN so they cant view all your data and spy on everything you do?

(Japan has this law restricting foreigners from purchasing SIM cards

Really? I managed to get a b-mobile SIM with no problems.

  • Handy as a back-up but make sure you have a paid one if data access is important to you. I had download speed of no more than 0.36Mbps outdoor last month. Reception indoor is hopeless.

tip for those travelling without much data: i would pre-load my google maps at the hotel using their wireless. once out on the road it wouldnt use much data\only the gps module for google maps. helps heaps to plan out your trip, especially since the japanese google maps tells you public transport right down to the exact platform and time

    • How did you manage to pre-load google maps for Japan? As far as I know Japan is not supported by google offline maps.

  • We used an 8 day unlimited sim, not unlike this one below. It worked great and we were glad to have reliable data service.

Perfect timing! I jumped on the Qantas deal so many thanks to you iSamurai.

  • Hi, I'm using the Wamazing SIM at the moment. It's pretty slow but can't complain for the price.

Has anyone done the Facebook share for the extra 500MB? I can't find that option in the app.

There's also a spot in the app to input promo codes for extra data. Does anyone have one they can share?
