    • Yeah only get a portable if you absolutely can't get a proper one installed (ie in a rental)… Being hard of hearing would be a bonus too.

We had a 12,000btu in a rental and it only just managed to cool a bedroom, the heat coming off the exhaust pipe made things worse, insulating that might be worth while.

      • This is pretty quiet unit. I think you would be surprised by it. We recommend a room no larger than 18sqm

  • Not bagging on the product or price. It's good value for money and all.

But buyers need to know that portable a/c systems are pretty loud and need to vent the hot air out of the room you're trying to cool. This is not easy if you don't have sliding windows or doors..

Two complaints I used to get all the time when I worked in electrical retail - noise (trying to sleep with loud a/c sucks) and ease of installation - they come with install kits and piping and stuff, but sometimes you have to get creative with the install!

Apart from that, good price and free shipping rocks!

  • i bought the apc12 for $50 more from bing lee around new years.
This is rather small and would struggle to cool anything bigger than a very small room eg 3m x 3m, and even that on a very hot day!
My advice, get one a little bigger

Thanks for the post. The APC12 is a $699 unit and I cant see where it was sold for $489. Are u sure u got it at Bing Lee for that price?

      • may be boxing day or new year sale. He may not have taken it on sale price ( no one does :) )

      • yep, got it for $489 from a bing lee in sydney.
        cheers

  • I know of a building in the Melbourne CBD which is using portable air con units while the building system is under repair.

They have a lot of them in the rec room and the exhaust pipes are heavily insulted in big springy silver tubes like in roof air conditioning insulation. Seemed to work reasonably effectively, but they had maybe 6 or 7 in a mid - large sized room.

Ideally the solution would be a fixed system, but where that isn't possible these might be reasonable.

    • We recommend a room no larger than 18sqm for this unit.

      • +1

18sqm in Tasmania… but probably only 9sqm or less in Sydney or Brisbane unless it's got excellent insulation. It's only 9,000btu (2,400W), and that doesn't allow for the re-radiated heat from the vent.

That said, they blow lovely cool air and are OK if they are blowing onto you. As a spot cooler these things are great (and what they are indended for) - I now use ours in my home office as a "super-cool fan" :-)
