Shopping for a new cooktop and came across this Omega hybrid cooktop which cost `25% of all other hybrid cooktops.
Seems like a good price.
$879 if you have access to the Commercial pricing.

This is so patently false I don’t know where to start.
There are some applications that gas is better. For example: simmering at low temperatures, or using a traditional round bottom wok.
For literally everything else, induction is faster and WAY more efficient.
Contrary to your belief ceramic and induction are superior in simmering at low temp, gas has inherent thermodynamic limitations that will cut out at certain threshold unless you have lab controlled conditions.
Depends on the quality of the cooktop no? Cheaper ones don't have ability to modulate power at the low end, it's either on or off
@ASR-Briggs: Nah, even the cheapest electric has 10 power settings, no way a gas one can have such fine tune, at low flow they all invariably shut off.
@ASR-Briggs: Mine has 14 levels plus a boost mode (for a limited time period), but they aren't even steps. Boost is like 150-200% power, 14 is 100%, 13 is 75% 12 is 50% 11 is 40% 10 is 30% and so on. So the low 1-5 levels are actually very low power with finer control.
I'd say most built in 60/90cm units would have similar control. But your $50 plug in ones probably don't have the best controllers in them. Definitely not a technology limitation though.
@MetalPhreak: Defintely alot of cheap ones are trash at low heat. I've used a few over the years. Actually on the hunt for a full size cooktop on a budget (kitchen is old af) at the moment.
The gas burner gives you flexibility. If it were the inverse, 4 burners and 1 induction coil then it'd be pointless. But the one burner lets you use cookware that might not be induction compatible - round bottom woks, glassware, stoneware etc and let's you char vegetables and alliums
I look at that gas burner and think, is it really worth moving your appliances all off gas, except a a section of your stove top?
~$365 in daily supply charges annually just so you can cook some dishes on a wok
I'd get full induction in the kitchen, then get a BBQ outside with a burner for woks. Connect BBQ to a bottle. No daily charge. Disconnect gas mains. That's my plan.
For this reason I am getting a wok burner outside, and only keeping induction inside. Apparently even when off the gas leaks into your house in quantities that can cause issues for kids.
~$365 in daily supply charges annually
Where? That is crazy. I pay a quarter of that in WA.
But you can easily have a BBQ bottle feeding the indoor burner. Many cooktops, including the above hybrid, come with LPG conversion parts included, they are so cheap. In much of Australia it is common to have outside gas cylinders feeding the kitchen.
@bargaino: I pay $25 a month in WA for my entire bill including usage. Only gas appliance is instantaneous HWS though.
@bargaino: @bargaino you and WA in general can thank Alan Carpenter for your cheap energy prices.
"former Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter was credited with "jawboning" gas firms into accepting the state's domestic gas reservation policy in 2007."
As for the east coast, the global gas giants are having a laugh at our expense, gov have just always let it happen and are continuing to do so, it's disgusting - other countries have nailed this problem, we just get nailed instead here.
Current pricing insight:
"AGL's gas daily charge (also called a supply charge) varies by location, network, and the specific plan you're on. For example, in NSW, the daily supply charge on the AGL Gas Standing Offer for residential customers is 96.75 cents per day"
Anyone found a good deal for a 70cm gas cooktop?
Just wait for another 18% cashback deal at TGG and grab this:
https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/westinghouse-70cm-induction-c…
Thanks for that but I'm looking for a gas one 😁
oh mb, I can't read
That's expensive considering you can get 60cm no name brands for 250 bucks, and they generally work fine
The 60cm westinghouse is exactly the same thing but with 5cm of glass missing from each side and goes on sale for 700ish quite often also.
@Monty1089: I got this one in June https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/westinghouse-60cm-induction-c…
for $776 with around 15% cashback from memory. Still sitting in the box waiting to be installed
@Kegsta: Nice. I do like the look of it. It also seems very easy to use. We have a gas stove and are looking at switching to induction. I will look around for some sales for this model because it is close to $1100 right now. $776 is a crazy good deal.
Plenty. Go to home clearance and buy even the cosmetic damage ones. way cheaper too.

Plenty on kerbside pickup.
What’s this brand like? I am going to replace my current gas at some point with an induction only.
Hey mate I was looking at a few induction brands but ended up going with the same as the oven, having the appliances match is something to consider
They are ok, they are Smeg's cheaper line
Thanks, I went to look online and seems that is part of the Residential group.
Good deal as the other combo ones are $3000 to $5000 for no good reason
I pieced 30cm + 60cm because of this lol.
I Did the same with Electrolux 60 Induction and 30 Gas
I just bought a gas cooktop as I do a lot of wok cooking and gas is more suitable
It's an odd combo.
If you already have gas cooktop, you'd have to pay to get another circuit run from the board to the cooktop? If you already have a powered cooktop you'd have to run gas to it?
Seems like a “gateway” option for gas-lovers or wok users
100% agree.
most gas stovetop needs power for the spark so they already have a powerpoint nearby
Nah induction needs to run on a seperate hardwired dedicated circuit.
Can't just plug em in.
I thought Omega only make luxury watch.
how's their build quality for cooktop ?
Different company most likely. Opposite ends of the scale.
Cooktops are probably fine, they are a cheaper line of products from Smeg that seem to be the go to products for new builds that aren't looking to be too luxury optioned. They are cheap but not too nasty, although I wouldn't buy one over a no name brand. I wouldn't buy a Smeg either for that matter, I know heaps of people that have had problems, and repair ability is questionable (mainly for other appliances, cooktops are relatively safe)
Fixed gas network chargers are going to become eye watering as people switch to electric. It’s a death spiral. I guess someone using this with bottle gas for occasional wok cooking has a legitimate use, but really, get off the gas network. Plus it turns your indoor air toxic.
Switched from gas to induction and could not turn back. Plus the extra savings from cooking during solar hours and battery is a bonus.
I am wanting to move gas hot water to heat pump but not really sure about their reliability in 7 years onwards. I've seen some people said they would break down in 6 7 years and repairing would be costly as they are hard to fix.
Don't install a heat pump boiler. Install a standard electric one and then pair it with solar and/or battery. The standard ones are cheap to repair - basically just the heating element dies once in a while, can be even replaced DIY.
hmm interesting tip, might look at that. We got solar pipe + gas boosted hot water and gas cooktop, since installed solar + battery. To change over the cooktop and water to gas would make the pay-off already way longer than the already ridiculous length it is now, but maybe this will be more tenable route if gas really goes through the roof.
This is silly. I am going to remove my gas connection and save $200/qtr.
The technology might have come a long way now, but I remember having an electric induction cook top 8 years ago and hated it, built the new house since then with full gas cooktop and found it a world of difference.
Funny a lot of people are of the opposite opinion. I purchased one of these exact units to convert to electric yet still have the gas incase of blackouts/odd occasions
Aiyo! How you get Wok Hei with induction?
Actually really easily, the wok can get so damn hot it just chars the food if you don't constantly stir. Put the induction on boost chuck a flat bottom wok on there and it gets hotter than any residential gas.
I actually have a combo stove and only use the gas on my claypots. Everything else including the wok goes on induction. On boost the wok bottom actually will glow red so that's over 450 deg.
If you only got a single phase 16 amp circuit then the induction won't get that hot as it will throttle. It really needs a 32 amp circuit. My stove on boost hits 3.7 kw.
Ahhh so it’s the PHEV of cook tops
I see that is can be used with LPG, which is pretty cool.. hook up a 9kg bottle to it if you don't have gas to your home!
