  • I'm so close to pulling the trigger on one of these. I know it's a toy, but the videos of how it holds position in some reasonable wind, and the quality digital video stabilisation is pretty awesome for a toy. Wish it was local stock.

It doesnt record video to an sd card unfortunately so the video quality is dependent on the wifi signal which then records to your phone. This can be very laggy. I've got a xiaomi wifi extender on the way which is meant to improve the signal received. Even at only a few meters away from you you can get a bad signal.

  • Looks like a good one to practise on.

    • i bought a dji spark, my first drone. even a 5 year old can fly it, it just sits there if you don't touch any buttons. no practice needed. just don't fly in 25km/h+ winds without being in sport mode. within the first day i wished i bought a mavic air instead, i thought it would be a good idea to buy the cheap one to practice but it wasn't needed. i don't know how people crash these things. you gotta be real stupid to crash them, except for malfunctions of course.

      • Depends where and how you fly. I think it is good for orientation practise, especially if you are not using headless mode. Try to fly among objects, to be aware how far are they where are they with regards to the position of your aircraft.
This toy has the advantage of being under the legal limit of 100g so you can fly them pretty much everywhere.

      • Paid $2,499 for the Phantom 4 and flew it into powerlines I didn't see! Went to get the footage off it, the power zapped the board and fried it soo I lost the opportunity for viralinity on the gram

I want to check out my solar panels on my roof every now and then (to check how clean they are) but going up on a ladder is not an option. Is this good enough to handle that kind of purpose? Would anything cheaper work too?

maybe a super long selfie stick?

      • I don't have enough friends to fully make use of a super long selfie stick

        Good idea though haha

Set ypur camera to take a photo in time lapse mode to take a photo every 0.5 seconds and then throw it in the air and catch it. Practise with tennis ball first.

        • @Mahogany Granger: and almost guaranteed to get 100 of the photos to be out of focus with the last one showing large white line crossing the screen

    • Not an ideal solution as the camera doesnt have a way of tilting the angle of the camera. It's at a fixed angle.
Might be better buying a painter's pole and strap your phone to that. Set your phone to record video and it will be much better quality and you'll be able to see a lot better whats in your gutters.

      How about a periscope?

  • +1

That looks good. And … It is a toy! 80g! Below 100g so much less restrictions! (https://www.casa.gov.au/modelaircraft)

    • Only difference being

If your drone weighs more than 100 grams:
You must keep your drone at least 5.5km away from controlled aerodromes (usually those with a control tower)
You may fly within 5.5km of a non-controlled aerodrome or helicopter landing site (HLS) only if manned aircraft are not operating to or from the aerodrome. If you become aware of manned aircraft operating to or from the aerodrome/ HLS, you must manoeuvre away from the aircraft and land as soon as safely possible. This includes:
not operating your drone within the airfield boundary (without approval)
not operating your drone in the approach and departure paths of the aerodrome (
      without approval)
You must only fly during the day and keep your drone within visual line-of sight.
This means being able to orientate, navigate and see the aircraft with your own eyes at all times (rather than through a device; for example, through goggles or on a video screen).

  • Does anyone know if they fixed the choppy video issue? I'm still seeing mixed reviews.

Video is very intermittent straight from the app at the moment, i've got an extender on the way to see if that helps. Even at a few meters away it can be messed up.
It's fine for flying , but watching footage back makes you cringe.
Shame these dont have an sd card to record to.

Oh bugger…… Thanks for the confirmation . Shame about the microSD.
