What Bank Accounts Can Kiwis Open in Australia?

Hi guys,

Lot of banks eligibility criteria require Australian Residency - And I am guessing a Kiwi who is moving to Australia permanently is not a resident from day one.

So what bank account can they open when they land ?

Update 1: I Tried ING, and it does have an option for Overseas Passport but the only field is for Visa number. When I enter kiwi passport number it says Identity not verified.
I am after a no monthly fees transaction account.

Do they? I thought they just needed 100 points ID.

You don't need to be a permanent resident, or even a resident for that matter. I've had people here on holiday open an account with their passport + NZ drivers license

how to get an Australian bank account:
    (1) post on ozbargain complaining about how hard it is because you guessed it would be.
    (2) wait for people to post links to the banks which explains exactly what is required.
    (3) realise that it isn't that hard and google would have provides the answers.
    (4) have some smart arse ask you what the banks said when you rang them to ask.

Ah forgot: So what did the banks say when you asked, OP?

Hi. I've done this and its no issue.
Depending on which company you're currently with in NZ, they can actually open one for you before you leave.
I was with ASB, and they arranged the opening of a CBA bank account with credit card prior to departure - it was that easy.
Arrive in country, head to bank, prove ID = Done.
If you land in country and then create one, you'll need the 100 points as described above.

    To make the 100 points easy (excluding your passport);
The first thing to do when you arrive is to get a local license - thats pretty simple, as the NZ license is transferrable (just the eye test needed). Then get setup for medicare. That's not that as easy, as you'll need proof of address (utility bill, copy of lease etc).

No they don’t. They need something with to prove your address. Eg a utility bill or rental agreement. As well as photo ID.

Anyway I know commbank allows non residents to open an account, as does westpac and ANZ.

  • As a NZer, you are a "Resident for tax purposes" when you move here.
You will have no problem opening any bank account in terms of residency requirements.

    What bank

To be grammatically correct I think you meant…

    Whuch bink

More importantly for the mods, does their ChoiceCheapies login work on ozbargain?

All my international mates have Australian bank accounts so I can't imagine the requirements are that cumbersome.

As a Kiwi, you can only bank with ANZ.

You can open an Online Sheep Account at any bank.

  • CBA is popular with foreigners.

. I have multiple foreign mates with ING.

Have a look at their website again or call them. Maybe try entering your NZ passport number in the Aussie field
