Selling and Posting Item via Gumtree

Hiya, I'm a real amateur seller here….

Some interstate person wants to buy something from us and want to pay by bank deposit.
We have worked out the postage & handling, and I suggest we need insurance. It's all been agreed.
Just reading too many horror stories and hope to make sure that the money is received, parcel got delivered, no drama.

Our preference is certainly to sell locally, COD but alas, havent had much interest. Maybe Brisbane is still a country town LOL.

Anything else I should be careful here?

Gumtree, something, something, cash, face to face, oh why bother…

    If you must, look at:

Make sure the funds clear and move the funds out before posting the goods? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/381003

No you don't have to be careful just don't do it. Gumtree is only cash

Wait a few days after the amount clears before posting.

    PayPal

Unsure why the negs. PayPal poses no risk for the OP (seller) who would receive the money instantly with no chance of the cash / cheque deposit scams and bounce-backs.

PayPal is a Gumtree option but without the eBay type safety net.

I understand PayPal has no buyer protection however for the seller once the money is in OPs PayPal account the money isn't going anywhere. Only disadvantage would be the fees. Buyer has nothing to lose since using direct bank deposit anyway.

          Just my two cents.

          @adamfury:

          No seller protection either.

“Hi PayPal, my card was used fraudulently.”

“No worries, let me claw that back from the sellers account for you.”

Seller has no protection. The buyer can simply do a chargeback on their credit card.

Do not post till you actually have the money, pending doesn't mean it's your money yet.

Wait for funds to clear even if the buyer sends you a bank receipt (could be photoshopped)

Honestly I wouldn’t do this. I would hold out and wait for a local cash buyer. If you accept his deal wait for the cash to clear and transfer it to another account before posting.

  • Ask them to post cash.

Even if the fund clear and you move it out there were some horrors stories where bank able to reverse and put your account in negative, affecting your credit record if you don't fix it. How? Fraudulent cheque for example.

I buy and sell from Gumtree interstate all the time. I always use direct debit and wait for the moneyto hit my account. I only post registered post and always ask for signature on delivery.

  • I don't get all the paranoia here - as a seller just accept direct deposit and say you'll post it once the funds appear in your account, as Jakjakjak said just send via a service that requires signature - done.

Edit: if you're really paranoid, get them to deposit cash over the counter at a branch of your bank
