if only it had an ethernet port, I'd be getting this.

Ethernet port - Thanks for pointing that out - something I just expected - I'll have to be more careful…

      • as laptops get thinner, things have to give somewhere.

various administrative things I need to do with my laptop require ethernet.

        • they could've fit it in there but didn't

my 200 bux celeron netbook has (drop-down type) ethernet port eventhough it's as slim as a ethernet plug

    • +2

Can you just buy an adapter? Just asking, I am not an expert :)

various administrative things I need to do with my laptop require ethernet, and I'd rather have a laptop with it built in and not have to worry that I've forgotten my adapter… as several of my colleagues with the new Macbook Pro's have done.

        • Makes sense :)

        • Kinda doesnt though. Put adapter in laptop bag. Problem solved.

        • +1

@littletinyasianman: That's the theory, but the reality is that inevitably someone else will ask to borrow it or I'll leave it at home and then won't have the adapter when I need it.

    • +1

well you're gonna disappointed with the future, adapters.

      • +1

I'm ok with a slightly larger laptop and knowledge that I don't need to worry about where my adapter is and if it still works when I go down to the datacentre to do administrative stuff. ;)

        • Im with you on this. The sheer amount of times someones gone to the DC at 3am in the morning and the twit has forgot either their USB-RS323 adapter or worse the ethernet adapter are amazing

    • The Dell DA200 adapter also does HDMI, VGA and USB 3.0 so it's much better than a one-function apple adapter or the more expensive dock style devices. You could also pay a bit more for a DA300 which has DisplayPort and USB-C passthrough

  • Weird. Ebay page says touchscreen but im pretty sure this isnt the 4k version

  • Love that the ram and ssd on this model are upgradable!

    • +1

Yep upgraded mine last week, even has room for a 2.5” drive in addition to the factory pci-e SSD (2.5” drive must be 7mm max)

Note that the 8gb ram is made up of 2x 4gb sticks

  • Is this still worth or is it better to get an 8th gen i7 8570u?
    cheers

    • +1

Do you mean 8750H? The same specs with that is currently $900 more. How long are you willing to wait for that?

There's the 8550U, but that's low voltage so this should still be faster, and I don't believe they have a 15 model with it

      • thanks. no i am referring to the Ultra low i7 8th gen. I am considering other laptops as well.
So probably best to stick with this Dell?

        cheers

    • 8th gen is proving to be a huge leap forward on mobile. Better power efficiency and much much more powerful. So 2 questions:
      1) Do you use your laptop where getting an hour more battery is important or are you more likely to be near a power outlet?
      2) Are you actually doing things with your laptop which is maxing out the CPU?

Most people would answer no to those questions - so for most people this is significantly cheaper where it's not worth getting the Coffee Lake 8th gen chips.

      • Thanks.
1)I believe I will be pretty much always close to a power point. I guess 3-4 hours battery might be enough
        2) I am using lightroom for photo editing (that's why I am more inclined towards the 4k) and I would like to do light video editing.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate!

  • wonder if they've fixed the external hdd isssue yet. I've had one for nearly 12 months and no matter what I do, none of my 5 external hdds will be recognised. A common problem too.

  • Does anyone know if they still suffer from the Coil Whining?

    • yes design flaws

  • I just bought this for 1690 last week. Its still within the 14 day return policy I think. Is it worth the hassle to ask for a return or refund? Especially since I have a current support ticket with issues such as the lcd bezel peeling off WHEN I just received it.

    • Depends how much value you see in having shave off an extra $91 and possibly being without a machine. For the issue you've already raised with them, opt for a refund and buy this deal.

I returned my XPS 15 one year ago due to the coil whine Saga. Otherwise the unit if I remember correctly was working fine.

  • Is there a free slot for a HDD in this one? There's a few different versions so it's not quite clear.

    • +1

Yes, has a spare 2.5” 7mm slot. Will fit slim hdds or any ssd

Will need an optional SATA adaptor and rubber mounts to install - $12 on eBay

Easy way to check is by battery size - 56whr (in the fhd model) will have room. The 97whr battery (in the 4K model) does not have room

      • Thanks for the info Blonky! Missed out this time but I'll keep my eye out.

  • Would this work with an eGPU, ie Razer core or similar?

    • +1

      I think so

    • +1

Should but it has 1050 should be able to play most games

  • Nearly ducked, but out of stock now.

    Recent disgruntled purchaser.

  • Not sure about this price.
If it was a 1060, then maybe - but not a 1050 in my opinion.

  • I'm so glad I busy the whole day and didn't see this until it was too late.
