GTX 1080 now or GTX 1180 soon?

Please note that I want a blower style card. RBG does not interest me as I will put it in a server case (aka no window). Having a server case for me noise is not that important (the server is already kind of noisy). Having the hot air expelled from the case is a bonus for me.

Considering this deal:

You can buy a 1080 with 700 AUD. I know the 1070ti is a better deal at 630 AUD but it is not a blower style card.

The 1180 will probably be our soon, from what I understand it will be more powerful by a bit compared to a 1080ti.
The RRP of the 1080 was 599 USD, the blower style was 100 AUD more so 699. There are rumors that the RRP will be more than the 1080, so lets say in the end what I want will be 750 USD = 1100 AUD (1000 AUD + 10% GST) when it launches. I realize that some people will point our that I may have rounded up all the time but considering I did not put in the usual "Australian tax" that the sellers have for us I believe it will be a good approximation. You will have custom cards at better prices but not for some months.

Now between the price of 1080 and 1180 there is a 60% price increase. Surely the 1180 will not be 60% more powerful compared to the 1080 so would that mean that the current 1080 is a good deal?

I know people say do not buy now, your card will be obsolete soon… but a deal is a deal…

Did I miss anything with my calculations? What do you think the price will be. I understand that the calculations are different on a open air card.

    Buy now a 1080

Wait for the 1180 or 1170, it does not make sense to buy now

I know it makes sense to buy now but I will wait for the 1180 anyway to see what is what

  • Do you need the card right away or can you hold off?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but I recall hearing Linus from LTT mentioning they have a history of reducing the RRP at the 11th hour, just prioir to the official announcement…??
Rumoured 1180 specs look good on paper.

Is the 1080 enough for your intended purposes?

    • Hard to tell, I mainly play PUBG so a shitty optimized game that does not really work properly on any card. I also play in a virtual machine (see the LTT unraid gaming :) ) on a server CPU, so …. the GTX 1080 blower style can overclock worse so I will probably get 25% less performance to start with compared to a proper 1080 on a decent CPU. On the other hand I may be bored tomorrow and not really use the GPU anymore… I play now on a GTX 960 and that is fine with me except for PUBG.

I don't suppose the poor performance would have to do with it being run from within a VM?

        • From what I saw I get a 10% penalty because of that. I pass the GPU directly through the VM. I took that into consideration for the 25% less performance that I said will probably be getting.

          @misu p:

So your biggest increase in performance can be achieved for free? Not use a VM

        • @zeggie: that is correct, however where is the fun in that :)? 10% performance in PUBG from a GTX 960 means kind of nothing. I would get max 5 FPS extra so that means it will only work a little less crappy. The cheapest option would be to stop playing PUBG as any other game I play works fine.

It obviously means something if you're noticing a drop in performance and seeking an improvement.

The cheapest option would be to stop playing PUBG as any other game I play works fine.

I would say most if not all games played in a VM would be effected quite the same, whether you realize it or not.

    • I have been waiting for a long time now, I waited for Vega…. I was disappointed in it, I waited for the mining cards to come back on the market… that did not happen…. I wait for the new Nvidia cards but those will probably not come down to a proper price for 4 months. I am kind of tired of waiting.

      • your feelings are the goals of marketing for graphics cards, hence the delay, slow news, amazon US cancelling australian purchases, etc.
        aim for 1170.

    • reducing the RRP

Does it really matter what the RRP is? It seems to have little relevance to the actual price.

  • Ok, so the 1080 when it came out was 1300 aud according to this article: https://www.pcauthority.com.au/news/australian-gtx-1070-pric… to my calculations may be way, way off and in the favor of the 1080.

I did not calculate with the 1170, that may be a good deal.

Nvidia have rebranded their reference design cards as "Founders Edition" to justify a higher MSRRP compared to the later released aftermarket cards, and the entire 11xx lineup is virtually certain to have a significant price hike. Stock on Australian shelves is a little further away than the overly optimistic predictions I see thrown around on OzBargain, and even then you'll be forking out extra for the early adopter's tax if you buy within a couple of months of the 11xx card hitting shelves.

The sweet spot for purchasing a card in terms of price/performance AND taking into account future improvements is typically 3-9 months after a card launch, so unless you need the 11xx performance for your specific applications it would be hard to justify waiting weeks upon weeks for the card launch just for the privilege of paying through the nose.

    Go the 1080 now.

That is also my current calculation right now. I see people are voting another way but without any actual calculation to why.

    • to justify a higher MSRRP compared to the later released aftermarket cards

OK but they usually sell for less than aftermarket.

      • My (non scientific) observations of both gumtree and eBay say otherwise.

  • Until we see the price and performance of the new cards its a gamble either way. Bang for buck you might be better off with a 1080 if the new cards have a premium due to mining demand.

  • I'd wait till the new cards come out so the 1080 price drops. Apparently, they will be significantly better than the 1080ti just really depends on performance and the price nvidia set for these new cards.

    RBG does not interest me

Aren't you worried about losing games because of no RGB though?

    • +1

That is why I say that I loose performance because of my setup. It is all because of lack of RGB.

  • If your current GPU can play all games fine then just wait, if not then go for it or maybe think about a used GPU that would keep you gaming till the new cards come out.
My low end GTX 1060 6gb matches the old GTX 980's performance so you may regret it.

  • i forked out for a 980, and when the 1080 came out it was cheaper and almost 2x better.

they wont necessarily be more expensive. the market has been good for nvidia

  • wait a mid-range turing? it will certainly on par with 1080/1070ti performance and better priced.

    • Those are at least 6 months away. 1180/70 will come out soon 2 months probably, the prices will be crazy for a while, the reference cards will come out, the prices will come down a little. Then the mid range cards will come out again FE first, then aftermarket. I agree it would be smart to wait until that time.

  • I can tell you right now there will be a massive sell off of GPUs when the 11 series are released. Miners will be dumping their 10 series cards en mass, hoping to recoup the cost. Youll be able to pick and choose used 1080 and 1080 ti for cheap.
