This is a great price (just a few cents of the all-time low price) for an even greater game. If you have not played it yet, you really should despite the fact that the graphics are a bit dated compared to current graphics but still look great in my opinion.

I had $6.30 in my GOG wallet so grabbed it from there instead, but either way it seems to be a good price. It sounds like it needs a number of patches and mods to truly shine though - any recommendations?

I recommend GoG version, it also includes the Unofficial Patch 9.7, so if you are not effective at installing mods, it already comes with a significant update to the main game.
The Unofficial Patch should be considered mandatory as the game was released in a very poor condition due to closing down shortly after its release.

This was one of the first games to use the Source engine, and it was released before even before Half Life 2 was. Iirc there are recommended community patches for this game.
