Tool Set Recommendation - General

hi guys

I have got basic set of spanners from Bunnings, allen keys and screw driver/plier. I need to buy a set - need arose as the spanner cannot open the sump drain bolt.
Can you pls recommend what I should go for? thanks

This makes no sense. Why can't the spanner open the sump drain bolt? Wrong size?

    • It is the right size mate..i tried number of times - also with chaining the spanners !!!

Go to the gym and get yourself a set of muscles. That's how the stump bolt will undo. ;)

Alternatively, look for a spanner which has a longer arm for better leverage.

Are you turning it the right way?

Maybe give the end of the spanner a tap with a hammer, you may just need to 'crack' the bolt to unloosen it.

    • Doesn't seem to have a hammer?

      • Large stone?

        • head butt

        • @Nugs:
          Cheap sticks?

    • May be i will try tapping with a hammer.

You don't need a whole tool set for a sump plug. You could just use an adjustable shifter (be careful not to round the bolt).

Meaning no disrespect, but if you're unsure of what you're doing or what you need, perhaps you should consider taking the vehicle to a qualified mechanic.

    • Lol @ using a nutfcuker on sump plugs. You are my favourite type of person at work. I swear, sump plugs are engineered to round off using shifters. Not a day goes by that we are not removing rounded off sump plugs that have tried to be removed by your method.

Thanks for keeping me in a job. :D

Way to judge someone you've never met! I've removed my fair share of rounded off sump plugs (and tranny/diff drain plugs), but never rounded one off myself. Usually I can apply the right tool for the job. I have managed to use adjustable shifters (or some other tool) to break a drain plug that some muppet before me has started to round (therefore can't get a socket or spanner on it) - it's really not that hard if you pay attention to what you're doing!

Also, I'm not keeping you in a job. I do all my servicing, repairs and mods myself these days (except for things like head skimming and tranny rebuilds, as I don't have the right tools/experience). The amount of times I've had to fix a car after having taken it to a mechanic to be 'fixed' is beyond a joke.

  • Link the spanners?

    Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

There are two kind of spanner Imperial & Metric and it depend on the vehicle and the sump plug. check these tip: https://www.doityourself.com/stry/6-tips-for-getting-out-stu…
Usually i just warm the car up a bit and that does the trick.

    • thanks Mike - thats helpful. Will try after warming up the car !

If the spanner is definitely the correct size, put a metal pipe over it to extend the handle for better mechanical advantage.

(Don't do it if the spanner is loose over the bolt because that could round the bolt head edges causing it to be more difficult to remove later).

    • Or if leverage is the problem, you could also try linking ring and open spanners (if you have them) as depicted here: http://dualsportalchemy.com/2013/03/mechanics-tip-locking-wr…

You should only try this with good quality spanners. Cheap spanners may bend or break, which may result in you smashing a wrist or elbow on something etc.

  • Is it slipping or you're not able to turn it?

Perhaps you could borrow a page from Archimedes?

    • Just not able to turn - no slip

You just need a longer lever arm, or give it a few knocks with the hammer.

Often, old fittings have a generous corrosion layer. The knocks will fracture the corrosion and give it the energy to overcome that initial friction.

        • Thanks mate - I am going to do few of things as suggested coming weekend and hope it works. Thanks !

Breaker bar and a socket for sump plugs.

Don’t use spanners or shifters on sump plugs. Engineers spend a lot of time designing sump plugs just to round off when home mechanics use the wrong tools on them. Sump plugs are typically made of cheese and torqued up well beyond their limits.

And after you have totally goofed it up and rounded the sump plug off from the spanner slipping off for the 12th time, you will need to invest in some “Rounded off Nut and Bolt Extractor Sockets”

  • Finally I was able to get the oil change sorted - what did the trick was a metal pipe !!

One follow up question - since the oil change 2 days back - I felt that the car is burning way too much petrol - like I travelled a distance of 30km
    But showed me down 60km…

Was fine before the oil change…any ideas?
