  • How does this model compare to the highly revered budget G5?

Is it still worth buying grey stock over local for better features?

    • Very similar to the stock G5

    3GB RAM in 2018?
I mean, its a good price, but 3GB RAM?

    Motorola….Hello?

    • +3

That's actually not an issue for this phone. The biggest one is the Snapdragon 430 which is already quite old.

They did stick in a large battery though (4000mah) but it's unfortunate that the SD430 is not as power efficient as the newer 630.

      • Is it worth getting the G6 with Snapdragon 450 or the G6 Plus with Snapdragon 630? Battery is smaller with these two phones, 3,000mAh and 3,200mAh respectively.

I would reserve my judgement until I can see a price for both these phones. From what I can tell, we may not be getting the Moto G6 Plus in Australia because there is a Moto X4 selling here, it's a bit of a premium mid-ranger that has similar design and style to the G6. It has one trick up it's sleeve and it's that it's running Android One.

One kicker for me is that Motorola is not promising long term updates for these G series..

That means that the Nokia series has an advantage because they are actually 'Android One' devices that receive OTA updates from Google and you should receive 2 years of updates on these phones, meaning that Android P is likely.

          Anyway, I would recommend either:

Moto X4 (Android One) ($499 AUD)
Moto One Power Runs Android One, it has a Notch.
          Nokia 6.1 ($330 AUD)
          Nokia 7 Plus ($440 AUD)

For me, N7PLus is the most attractive because it's a Snapdragon 660 phone with a big 3800mah battery, coupled with a Zeiss lens. Probably the best mid ranger for Q3 2018.

        • @scrimshaw: Nokia 7 Plus is $649 @ JB Hi Fit - they did recently have 15% off this phone. If I could get Aus stock for $440 I'd definitely consider it. JB have the X4 on sale for $499 but it is not Android One.

They are selling the G6, G6 plus and G6 Play in Australia. I can get the plus through allphones for $442.99 and the G6 for $353.59 with the 20% off sales. They are selling them above the RRP.

The other phone I'm interested in is the Xiaomi Mi A2, should be out soon.

    • what apps need the 4th GB ?
Google designs android to be small so it fits on small memory devices, and app developers also keep apps small so they fit on the biggest selection of phones and they get the most customers.

but it does look on brochures to differentiate phone models from competitors.

I'd be more concerned about getting Google Treble support so phone has some life span for updates.

  • Does this have dual Sim and separate micro SD card slot?
    Thanks

    • +1

External storage Until 256GB microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC

Dual SIM Dual SIM Standby - Call active on one sim card
      SIM card 2 slots Dual-SIM nano-SIM (4FF)

      2nd sim doesn't support 3/4g

      • Practically all dual SIM phones are dual standby. Which means while you are in a call you can't use data. Unless, as I understand it, your telco uses VoLTE. However outside a call both SIMs are polling 4G. Dual active phones are rare because of the power consumption of two transceivers.

  • edit

  • As Ynwa1986 stated above the 2nd sim doesn't support 3/4g so the Dual Sim feature is not a workable function in Australia OP should change listing to reflect that.

    • It's interesting that the AU Motorola site shows the specs for the G6 Play as Dual SIM supporting 4G/3G.

Unlike the specs for the G5 which specifically mention in the notes that it's 4G/2G until an update is applied, (which never happened apparently).

Sent a query to Motorola, see what happens.

They also state max. external storage is 128GB.

        Reply from Motorola:

With regard to your inquiry, please be advised that Moto G6 Play supports 4G for 1st SIM slot and 3G on the 2nd SIM and it has a "dual standby" SIM, which means that you can receive calls on either SIM at any given time, and that if one SIM is in use, the other will go to message bank. The model number for the Moto G6 Play is XT1922-1.

        • But don't Allphones Online sell grey imports if so the phone they are selling maybe a different model XT1922-5 for example. https://www.phonemore.com/motorola-moto-g6-play-xt1922-5/speā€¦

          @coin saver:

Up to you to ask them, given the BS that happened with the G5+ models and eGlobal/DWI it would be the first thing I would be checking.

Ask them for the Model Number on the box and the Software Channel, (Settings->About Phone->Software Channel if it exists - you want retapac -> Retail Asia Pacific).

The one you linked to will be retbr (Retail Brazil), (I think).

You could try asking them them for the retail market on the box, my G5+ was: MOTOROLA,XT1685,RETAIL,TW,LUNAR GRAY,32GB,DS - the TW (Taiwan) would indicate it's Asia Pacific area.
