Laptop for photo editing and light video editing

Hi to all the Ozbargain tech gurus.

I am looking for suggestions on which laptop to get.

The usage are above. Mainly photo editing, but I would like to do some not too complicated video editing with Da Vinci Resolve or anything similar. With light i mean FHD and not UHD as not all my devices record in UHD.

I would like to spend around $1700.

The Dell XPS 15 is currently selling for $1749 on ebay.

Is there anything with similar spec that is cheaper or with better screen?

Ideally I would like to get a 2 in 1, doesn't matter if I have to get a 13 inches.

One of the most important thing is the display , followed by specs, followed by being a 2 in 1, possibly with a pen.

I am really confused as I am not an expert.

The XPS 15 FHD screen is on par with the rest of what the competitors offer. It is pretty good, covering 100% of sRGB and 64% Adobe RGB, and you aren't going to find anything better except the XPS 15 UHD version, which is spectacular, covering 100%+ Adobe RGB. If you want the best then the UHD version is the way to go and you might have some luck camping out the Dell Outlet. Otherwise the FHD version is fine.

You will want more RAM, too, so factor that into your costing. 8GB is probably not enough (I mean, it will work, but it will be slow), 16GB is probably fine and 32GB would be great :D

    • ACctually there are some good refurb in the Dell outlet… do you have any ideas if they create custom listing for refurb models? I just sent them an email if you don't know.

    • EDIT, they just replied:

We do not sell units of ebay, all the DFO units are being sold on our outlet website.

The UHD is sold for 1899, i7, 16gb, 512gb hdd

What kind of editing are you doing with da Vinci resolve? Colour correction?

You can do pretty good photo editing on the phone with Snapseed

The Dell XPS 15 is a good pick, I'm still using an older Samsung ATIV Book 8 (specs similar to a 2012/13 MacBook Pro) that edits well though video exporting times can be a bit longer

    • I use Lightroom and Photoshop. Snapseed on the phone is not exactly what i am after :)

Colour correction on video, not yet, but I am planning to start. That is why I would like to have something a bit capable.

Can you recommend a better or cheaper machine?

      cheers

IMO that Dell XPS is one of the better laptops out there around the price. It's like the windows version of the MacBook Pro. Go visit the Microsoft store there's a Dell XPS 15 to try out there to see if it's something you like. It should handle photoshop and Lightroom no problems.

Video editing just depends what you're editing and how long the end clip will be. It will still do it fine but export may just take longer and that's not a bad thing - example my Samsung exports a 2 minute video in 20+ mins and I'm ok with that considering its age.

        • Thanks mate.
I will edit 5 mins clip, max resolution 1920x1080, transitions and potentially color grading. Is it worth to get the 4k?
Bear in mind photography is an hobby, not a profession ( well, I'd like but …)

If I recall the 1080p screen has better battery and is less demanding than with the 4K screen. Should be a great laptop either way have a play with one at the Microsoft store when you get a chance to sus things out

        • @Allan:
that's actually a good idea as i work in the city!

I am even thinking about an Inspiron 13.3.
          I found a refurb 13.3 inches 7373, i7 8550u, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, FHD IPS.

I know it is not as good as the XPS but… do you think it will be ok for my use?

I love it for its portability and for the 2 in 1 factor

        • @ets27: for photo editing should be ok. For easy video editing should be ok too (like with windows movie maker if they still have that) but may struggle with da Vinci depending on gpu
