IPVanish Handed over Detailed Logs of a User to Homeland Security

https://torrentfreak.com/ipvanish-no-logging-vpn-led-homelan…

Just thought I'd post this, I know that in this particular circumstance, everyone will be glad they caught the guy but clearly, "no logs" doesn't mean what I thought it did…

Think I'll have to get some Bitcoin and start a new VPN account.

The freedom and liberty are dead in Western countries, and we have none here in Australia! Particularly, the freedom of speech is dead. Big brother is watching.

With these two communist parties, we need a first amendment, maybe a second too!

  • Looks like after receiving the initial request they turned on logging, and then handed over the logs when the second request was made.

That would explain "Well, we don't keep logs, but if you ask us again in a few weeks time…"

People hate kiddie fiddlers, go figure. It's when they come for your torrents you need to worry.

    • First they came for the terrorists and I said nothing. Then they came for the kiddy fiddler's. And I said nothing Then they came for me. I looked around, "will no one say anything?"

      There was no one left.

I mean - I get what you're trying to say, but this world of yours is pretty bleak if it's only got terrorists and kiddy diddlers and you.

Cant use a US based VPN. Exactly why LTT dropped tunnelbear

    • Why is no one talking about prism anymore?

  • I know that in this particular circumstance, everyone will be glad they caught the guy

The exact opposite. It's like when the police egregiously breaks some law or regulation, but ends up catching a pedophile. No - it's not a good thing, it encourages the police to further misconduct, and it makes people more accepting of this misconduct.

I don't think they did anything wrong, it's ipVanish thats done the dodgy.

      • IpVanish that has done the dodgy thing, legally, * if at all.

As in, this guy isn't gonna have a lot of luck suing them after all this, even with the system wanting to keep him down, IpVanish complied with a court order etc etc

  • The problem is that they have demonstrated that they maintain and handover logs. Goodbye Ipvanish.

    • If you read the court documents it's more like they'll start logging and hand them over if asked.

    • I think the problem is that in the future, they will point to this case and say, we could not done it if they had not kept logs, therefore they must all start keeping logs.

And in Australia now, I think it won't be long till someone pipes up that a VPN is a circumvention of Australian metadata retention laws ?

  • PIA Winning Team! At least this guy had someone in his corner after his mate threw him under the bus.
