Apparently, could be wrong, it's going to be a free game in it's final release - but you must effectively pay for it in Early Access by buying a "Champion's Pack" which contains additional player types or skins (which you will be able to buy in the free game after it's released).
You cannot play the Early Access version without a Champion's Pack.
So I assume this deal is getting you a free Champion's Pack.
It doesn't seem to include the Champions Pack (the Champions Pack upgrade is on sale during the giveaway).
So interestingly it's a copy of the game without the Champions Pack which wasn't previously attainable directly from the Steam Store.
In that sense, it's not technically worth full price (since you're not getting the extra Champions pack) but you're still getting to play the base game you otherwise would have to pay to get early access to.

I bought this when it first came out and couldn't even find a game after 15 minutes. Tried again a week later and same deal. Refunded.
But now… I'll grab it again and see if the player base / matchmaking is better.

apparently you get to keep playing free after the week ends according to E3 stream(quake live was free for ages), not sure how good the game will be…. with the inclusion of special abilities.
when it first came out there wasn't Australian servers so you also need that for it to be fair/fun
It's had Australian servers for quite some time thankfully. They also fixed the awful netcode it had at launch. They just recently released an update with bots on unranked matchmaking to fill empty player slots. Unfortunately the bots are horrible and let bad players pad out their score.

The most recent update to the game pads out empty matchmaking slots with bots which helps a bit, the AI is really bad atm though so it seems they added it prematurely.
The mention of bots takes me back to the sweet, sweet days of offline Battlefield 2.
Is there a way to tell who is a bot? I was playing yesterday and noticed sometimes enemies would just stare at me or get stuck in a loop of ducking in and out of cover. I actually thought I was an almost decent player for a moment..

Who wants to 1v1 I'm pre decent (well was haven't played since doom being added in or since like aug last year)
I played it for one afternoon with the previous free thingy. The way enemy players are marked in game, I though, gee that would be easy to make an aim bot for. Then I joined a game of the game type where everyone has rail guns … and someone obviously had an aim bot running. Their kill count was 4 x second place. Stopped playing after that.
i paid 5 bucks for it… managed to get into 1 game over a period of 3 hours of waiting.
there's just SFA people playing it. Waiting in a lobby, is not my idea of entertainment.

3hrs sounds like something is wrong on your end or you queued for sacrifice which nobody played. Normally only takes me 10-15min to get a match.
that was matching to all game modes… it wasnt a 3 hour block, it was multiple attempts accumulating that time frame. 15 minutes to join a game is ridiculous.
I liked it, enjoyed original quake, quakeworld. It's not the same of course, but it's decent. I don't think I have the skill/reflexes I used to have though, so I'm not very good any more.

It's free if you activate it during the promotional period

They gave me a copy for free a while ago and I couldn't find any games online.

Great game, they need to work on the game dynamics though.
Actions are still wooden such as rocket jumping, rocket push-back, etc
