Ouch Travel Insurance

Has anybody used Ouch Travel Insurance (http://www.ouch.com.au/) before? Any experience with their claims process?

I'm looking at taking out the Premium Plus Extra's cover to go to the USA for 5 weeks.

They cost a little more than SCTI and TID but the cover seems fairly comprehensive, and covers unlimited emergency dental, which SCTI and TID don't.

They are underwritten by QBE and you go through QBE for all claims, their cover is similar to QBE's but costs about half.

In this article, where SCTI was rated as best value, Ouch was rated as having the best coverage for USA: http://www.insurancenews.com.au/local/southern-cross-rated-t…

There are a couple of positive reviews around but my only concern is that I can't find much from people who have used them and I had never heard of them myself.

I thought I'd throw it out here and see if anybody has any insights or experience.

Cheers.

  • I've used Ouch but didn't need to claim.

    Ouch? Sounds painful…

  • I've had ouch in the past, but found also covermore being a good value. Couple of claims with both companies, no probs there. Both have plenty of small print in their policies, but both good value, especially ouch has some occasional specials.

  • Maybe look at downunder insurance where you get 11% back from Moneybackco. I havent compared to Ouch, but it was cheapest of the others you quote. They use Mondail assist

  • or get a credit card with included travel insurance

    • Seriously though, any credit card with that will cost you about $200 a year or more, even if you don't incur any interest. Maybe that makes it worth it if you travel a lot, but by a lot it would need to be about 2 months a year I think, just to make those fees worthwhile. Even then, you gotta question what the AMEX policy covers compared to TID and Ouch etc…

      • Those credit cards are free for people that have a large relationship with the bank, either mega mortgage mugs with a huge mortgage, or people with lots of term deposits etc.

        Also free for staff.

Bankwest Zero has travel insurance included with no annual fee http://www.bankwest.com.au/Personal/Credit_Cards/No_Annual_F…

        • Hmm you need the Gold or Platinum one. How do you know if you're eligible? I don't wanna fill out my personal details lol.

  • amex usually has that
if ya purchase the tickets with ur card ur fine
    also check ur health provider
    i know medibank has it
and if you go for over 1 month i think
u can freeze ur health insurance and buy travel insuranc e

  • most travel insurance "providers" just act as the seller for insurance, e.g. Virgin, NAB, even Medibank. I've found that they all have something in common, that is they are underwritten by Mondial Assistance.

If you are a member @ Medibank, you get 10% off premiums. For 2 ppl, for a year, the quote was $442.80. Otherwise full price is $492.

For the "mostly same" coverage, with Virgin, the quote was $458, and with NAB it was a whopping $581. I say "mostly same" because I haven't looked at all the details, but I don't expect it to vary much. So, don't take my word for it, you will have to go through the PDS to make sure the cover suits you.

Similarly, someone mentioned credit cards with insurance. Don't know all there is to know about credit cards, but I do know the Virgin card @ $99/year offers travel insurance. For a basic platinum card, I think that's pretty good value.

ps. Makes no difference whether you buy travel insurance for one person or 2 people. Not sure why.

Just be careful that you know what you are getting with credit card travel insurance. They usually have a high excess, low limits, strict conditions, no extensions, limited cover for pre-existing conditions and age restrictions. This is probably fine for the normal person, just make sure it is right for you.

  • The TIDXMAS voucher was still working when I tried a week ago. With the voucher for TID I'm not sure that the emergency dental is as much of an argument. TID covers dental to a degree I think *-)

    • The <b>TIDTHANKS</b> voucher is also working for $10 off for TID

World Nomads <b>VOYGNR</b> code for 7% off still works. World nomads cover non-australian residents which may be applicable to some people on here, other companies will not cover you but they dont make that obvious (its in the PDS).

      • The XMAS voucher gives 10% off. For 5 weeks in the USA it would be more than $100 so therefore TIDXMAS would be a greater discount…

  • i haven't tried ouch insurance, but im interested. i am looking for good travel insurance providers. i used to have one from mbf but i wasnt pleased with it. im planning to try nib (you can check it here: http://www.nib.com.au/home/newtonib/travel/Pages/TravelInsur…) but i am not that convinced. do you think ouch insurance could be better than nib? do you have any other suggestions? thanks!
