  • damn good deal! Now just which ones are usefulo for me…

  • i believe u can get these (abeit some that are out of date) for free off bit torrent :P

    • Is that legal? I thought they were copyrighted.

      • Aye, each copy if watermarked with the purchaser's details and type of licence (usually in the margin of each page).

  • Australian Standards are protected by copyright, so sharing them is illegal. Being in possession of "stolen goods" is bad enough without basing your business operations on a Standard that is both sourced from an unreliable place and, as you say, "out of date".

      a) You're supposed to mark your account as "Rep" if you work for the company.

      b) You can hit "reply' on a comment to reply to it.

      c) Your company appears to have a monopoly on selling Australian Standards, even though some of them are required to be followed by law. That is, as person can be fined or otherwise punished for not following a law, which they need to purchase from your company.

This is more than a little creepy.

      • +1

I'm almost certain that if something is required by law, it has to be able to be accessed freely by entities which the laws are required of.

It's indeed more than a little creepy.

  • By the way… here is the link to the good deal (expires 1159pm on 26 January, 2011).

  • I also got this email but have given this a +1 just because I think it's such a great deal!

  • Hehe kind of wish I didn't get these for free through my institutional membership now… (well no not really but you get what I mean)

  • HELL YES!!

  • Do people actually pay $400 each for each document?

    • yep, standards are grossly overpriced

i used to state library to look at one standard i was interesting in

    • People rarely do, but business do it daily.

Businesses needs access to the standards, and they need "official" ones at that in case they get audited etc.

They can also write the cost off as an expense, so it ain't too bad…

    • …or more! [sigh] I recently had to buy a 5-user (workgroup) copy of AS/ISO10002:2004. They set the ream tool to "LARGE"

    • +2

Haha … this can't be true … they charge for Standards ??? Just the document … ??? And then you can say you follow the standard?
Would love to neg this deal … as I think the whole concept is ridiculous and a rip off.

But the saving is great 400 to 20.11 … just shows how overpriced the whole thing is.

Australian Standards are created by experts in their fields and can involve hundreds of people's contribution in that creative process.

Their average life is 7 years before they are superseded by a newer edition.

They are priced between $9 and $390.

That means that a business is using the intellectual property in a Standard over and over again year in and year out to help drive their business.

All for the starting price of barely more than $1 per year… exceptional value in anyone's language.

As far as a workgroup version is concerned, that allows 5 people to simultaneously read the Standard, i.e. the same scenario as buying 5 copies of book so that 5 people can all read it at the same time.

On mini_wombat's comment… "And then you can say you follow the standard?"

    Not really.

If I buy a Ferrari, I can certainly tell anyone I am a Formula 1 champion.

If I buy a Standard, I can say certainly tell anyone I follow it.

But neither case is necessarily true.

The founding basis of capitalism, caveat emptor (let the buyer beware), essentially means that one should seek proof of adherence to a Standard (or that one is a Formula 1 champion!).

It is for this reason that many organisation's seek competitive advantage by investing in a management or manufacturing process based upon a Standard and then seek 3rd party verification that they do indeed adhere to that process.

This is called certification and is a service delivered by many organisation's under the auspices of JAS-ANZ (http://www.jas-anz.com.au/)

A organisation can then rightly claim that it has implemented and follows, for example, a quality manufacturing process.

For those that are interested, a paper on the value of Standards to society (fire extinguishers that work, bicycle helmets that work properly, buildings that don't fall down with the slightest earth tremor) can be found here http://www.saiglobal.com/Information/Standards/Standards%20A…

These standards are discipline orientated and professional use. Most people won't really find a use for it.
This is a great deal for business that don't want to pay a yearly license to access the standards.

  • Australia has some of the highest standards in the world. They are helping to keep you, your family, and everyone else safe through their application in anything from car windscreens to the design of beams. Manufacturers also apply them to many consumer goods which ensures they are of a certain quality.

It costs a lot of money to develop and update these standards, but it would be worth it at twice the price just so we can enjoy the quality of life we have in this country.

  • This is a great deal for all the small contractors who still have to keep up with the latest standards but usually can't justify the expense of "the latest version".
Only downside is that the 1700+ listed don't seem to include the major standards that they might want i.e. AS3000 for the sparkies.

  • I'm changing my vote to a neg.
As far as I can tell all the discounted standards are obsolete or too obscure to be of value to almost anyone. So it ends up just being a scam to get your personal details and spam you.
