20% off Yearly Subscription to The Sizzle Technology Newsletter $48 (Was $60) @ The Sizzle

Hi, I'm Cam Wilson from the Sizzle, Australia's favourite tech newsletter. Each week day, I send subscribers the top Australian and global tech stories, best tech deals from OzBargain and some fun stuff too. It's a great way to stay across what you need to know, especially when you're busy.

It's almost the end of the financial year, so that means a sizzling deal. Skip the free trial and go straight to a paid subscription using the link above, or trial for two weeks for FREE NO CREDIT CARD and still get this offer before the EOFY (so you can still claim it as a deduction).

If you're wondering what The Sizzle is all about, here's some comments from the last time there was a Sizzle deal on OzBargain:

zigzagoonmemes: Been a subscriber since the last deal - worth every $ to me: condensed tech news with an often Australian spin delivered straight to my inbox.

mskeggs: Good deal. Still happily subscribed here. Pleased to read a newsletter that isn’t scared to use a curse word when there is some particularly ****** up stuff going on instead of pussyfooting around trying sound “professional” instead of human.

admr: Yeah good deal this, been a sub since almost the first week… good daily tech summary, deals.

The link to the deal is here: https://thesizzle.com.au/upgrade?offer_id=dd432392-b78a-48a8…

Feel free to ask any questions in this post - I will be monitoring it regularly!

FAQ:

  • Is there a sample? There are free posts on https://thesizzle.com.au like this one from Friday: https://thesizzle.com.au/p/youtube-price-spike-period-tracki…
  • Is there a free trial? Indeed - just visit https://thesizzle.com.au and you can sign up for a 2 week trial, no credit card required.
  • What happened to the other guy? The Sizzlefather, Anthony 'decryption' Agius, handed it over to me after nine years of running it. He's still around the Sizzle slack and forum, and might even pop in to write an edition or two soon. When I'm not writing the Sizzle, I'm a tech reporter for Crikey where I write stories like OzBargain's never-ending hunt for cheap KFC: https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/07/08/kfc-ozbargain-cheap-chi…
  • I am an existing paid subscriber, how can I use this coupon? You can't, new subscribers only.
  • Does the subscription automatically renew? Yes it does - you will get a reminder email a week before the anniversary date.
  • Can I cancel my subscription? Yes, always happy to give pro-rata refunds
  • I don't have a credit card/hate automatic renewing subscriptions, can I still join The Sizzle? Sure, but you can't use the coupon. Send me an email [email protected] and I'll walk you through it.
  • I'm a student/unemployed, I can't afford this? Send me an email [email protected] and we'll sort something out.

Thanks for all your deals and community, OzBargain!

It's just a joke! I'm sure most people realise I'm not trying to misrepresent anything, but just having fun (like I try to do in the newsletter).

@bootlace: Just as an FYI, that’s technically an invalid use of a negative vote.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines
              Inappropriate uses of negative vote:
Disliking poster's comments or deal descriptions.

            • +6

@bootlace: You seem like a thoroughly unpleasant individual.

            • +8

@bootlace: How about you just not…talk any more

                • +1

                  @bootlace:

                  Neckbeards be damned

Nice try, implying you aren't a neckbeard.

                • @bootlace: ACCC: ‘Puffery’ refers to wildly exaggerated and vague claims about a product or service that no one could treat seriously. For example, a restaurant claims they have the ‘best steaks on earth’. These types of statements are generally not considered misleading.

As an existing subscriber I can say I get my moneys worth.
About 3 articles a day (in a single email), about 5-10 min read with heaps of links for those articles you want to get more info on.
As an added bonus the deals section at the bottom of the email look suspiciously like the top ozbargian posts, meaning i also miss less ozbargain deals :)

  • How does this compare to TDLR newsletter for tech related stories?

    • +3

Hadn’t heard of TLDR, but just signed up thanks.

Looking at the latest issue, TLDR looks very much like a AI summarisation. I skimmed over most of it and only really read 1-2 bits.

The sizzle writer also writes for crikey, has a few jokes, opinions, much more Aussie focused and is a nice light read. I’ll usually read the whole thing. In fact it’s the first email I’ll look for when I jump on the train home from work.

      • I doubt it's ai-generated

        • +1

I think it would be, have you seen how many sub newsletters they have now?

    • I was subscribed to TLDR and very much prefer The Sizzle as it has an Australian focus in any analysis Cam provides.

Also, the humour and snark in my daily Sizzle make this a very real newsletter for me. I have found so many good deals though the bargains section and Cam now has these in categories that have grown (Though KFC deals have not yet made it on the list, so he’s clearly resisting the urge).

If you’re in tech sector, into tech generally, or just looking for a newsletter that sums up the goings on in tech in Aus in a human way Cam (And Anthony before him) and the Sizzle are a great daily update for this.

    What happened to decryption?

    • +1

He took a step away from it as he didn't enjoy doing it anymore from what I remember

        • +22

"was not profitable enough to cover him full time" - I did not say this. This is what I said:

It might sound like this decision came out of nowhere but I've wanted to slow down or stop writing The Sizzle for months now. I'm bored of writing a daily newsletter. It simply isn't fun anymore and it's now a chore I do on autopilot. After almost 10 years and over 2,300 issues I guess that's kinda expected. I've also reached the limit of how far I can personally grow this newsletter and don't have the energy to keep cooking up new ways to let people know it exists. Receiving a full-time job offer from my friends at Assembly Four where I've been working part-time for 2 years, plus turning 40 a few weeks ago, was the nudge I needed to make a change and re-calibrate my work-life balance.

          • +1

@decryption: Thank you for the clarification:)

          • +1

@decryption: Thanks for the enlightenment. Hope the change has worked out well for you. Thanks for creating the Sizzle. It's good value.

          • @decryption: Wait, so you are going to stop writing the sizzle?

            • @serpserpserp: Mate I haven't written it since December 2024.

              • @decryption: Just wanted to jump in and say thanks for all your writing Anthony over the years. I've got some pretty fond memories refreshing Mactalk every morning for the daily news and listening to the weekly podcast.

Coincidently I found myself having a binge read on your blog earlier this week. I reckon your writing is at the best when you're just exploring some random rabbit hole and needing out. I hope the blog isn't going away anywhere.

Also, what was the iOS podcast you had called too with Lauren and Pete if I remember correctly? Was it can't touch this or something?

Hey Cam. Sizzle subscriber here. Can you please add the issue number to the start of the subject line? I miss that.

  • +3

Australia lacks high quality journalism. Especially tech related. Easy subscribe here.

    • +2

thank you so much! One of the great things that I get to do with the Sizzle is keep an eye out for some of the GREAT journalism that's happening in less well-known places, like some of Australia's more niche publications. It's a real treat being able to share other people's great work, and tell people why it matters.

  • +2

Was hoping Sizzler was making an Australian wide comeback

    • That's Stage 2

      • Please report back when that happens!! Papa needs his cheese bread (and yes I know you can get a version from the grocery store)

    • -1

If that's what you're after, Reddit might be more up your alley.

  • +3

Enjoyed the tone and content of the example from Friday - signed up to give it a go and support a real human writing this stuff in an Aussie-focussed way.

    Thanks for the deal

    • Thank you ricochet!

I was subscribed for close to a year - to me it didn't add anything.

Yes, there's bargains in there - but they're pulled straight from here. If you don't read Ozbargain it's helpful, otherwise it's repetitive.

There wasn't any news for me in there that I hadn't read somewhere else. YMMV - I tend to read around quite a bit.

The forum is about as lively as a cemetery during Grand Finals.

Key thing is that I was not a fan of the writing. There was the occasional guest editor - whom I generally liked better - but the original editor's tone seemed to aim to appear relaxed and knowledgable without ever conveying either aspect.

    • +5

yeah my thoughts, just saw no value in it

    • +3

I think you summarised it well.

If you are already hitting a few tech sites daily then this won’t give you much extra.

As someone who used to hit multiple tech sites a day but have since moved positions and changed personal circumstances I no longer have that luxury.

This newsletter gives me 70% of that with 5% of the effort :)

    • +1

Totally fair. For people who haven't subscribed, here's the pitch: I spend time finding the most important Aussie/global tech news (as well as deals and some fun stuff), summarise it, give a bit of context/analysis for why it matters from an Aussie perspective, and send it to you each day.

It's for people who want — or need, for work — to stay across what's happening. Also with the Slack/forum, there's somewhere to talk with people who care about this stuff too.

It's not for everyone but I do think there's a reason that 1300~ people subscribe.

    • occasional guest editor - whom I generally liked better - but the original editor's tone seemed to aim to appear relaxed and knowledgable without ever conveying either aspect

How does one pick up on a relaxed tone that isn't conveyed?

  • crikey lol

  • +3

Hell yeah Cam Wilson does awesome reporting

  • +1

Dude. You subscribe to a library and get online access to top tech magazines online. So why shell out money for yours?

  • at first I read this as free 20 year subscription to the sizzle

that would have been too good to be true eh lol

  • +1

Great product. Any love for a subscription about to expire in a week or so?

  • -3

if you like your political commentary with a side of tech news this is the newsletter for you!

    • +3

It's almost like technology news has a lot of crossover with politics or something lmao

    • Dropped out of the subscription a while ago for this reason.
No issues with general polical commentary, but this thing ended up very unilateral, gossipy and out of touch with most of society.

  • +2

I've been a Sizzle subscriber for years, and look forward to it hitting my inbox every weekday. The assicated slack channel is also a great place to hang out and shoot the shite with a bunh of like-minded geeks

  • +2

The sizzle is great, slightly prefer Decryptions style over Cam's, but they're both great, and I really respect Cam's journalistic style.

I'm also a Crikey subscriber, Cam gave a big FU to the debacle that is kings birthday honours by publishing details of Scomo's Order of Australia before the media embargo lifted. Legend.

  • +3

I signed up last year. Really enjoy the daily newsletter. Thanks Cam.

I do wish this deal was available for resubscribers during this window. Save me using a different email to redeem the offer!

  • -1

    Really good newsletter, would recommend!

  • -1

Highly recommend. This was my first paid newsletter and I genuinely look forward to reading it each day.

  • +2

Also a recommendation from me. Subscribed for a few years. I don't much care for spending lots of time browsing multiple news sources and blogs every day, so a summary of the important tech stories, plus a smattering of quirky stuff I'd probably never come across myself, is really appreciated.

And Cam, you're doing a great job since taking over. But I am missing Anthony's swearing so don't be afraid to chuck in more f-bombs.

    • thank YOU crikey!

  • -7

    Oh gawd I remember when I last subscribed… back in 2023 I got 3 days warning for a 20% increase ($50-> $60) and auto-renewal.. scammy bugger

404media is actual real world IT journalism with real world revelations, not just an AI bot regurgitation.

  • +1

    Worth it.
No, that's it, just worth it.
Cam has continued the quality of Decryption's initial concept & added his own flavour/style.
Slack and the forum give you the option to interact with other subscribers and talk to him direct, so if you want to sook/suggest/salute you can go straight to the source.
