4K monitor vs 4K TV - general viewing

Was wondering if anybody could chime in and tell me your results and experiences with using a 4K monitor vs a 4K TV for basically everything.

Does YouTube look different or better

Does Netflix look different or better

Do webpages look different or better

Don't need to say much about gaming as most say they are relatively the same

I like big screens but not at the expense of quality and while I know the dpi on a monitor may be higher than on a tv I feel like the big screen feel will outweigh the minor enhanced detail especially in this day and age and my specific user case situation.

I will be mainly sitting on my bed with the screen about 1.2 to 2 metres away from me.

Looking at either 55 inches curved or standard.

Really eyeing the Kogan MU8010 or MU9500 because of really good price but my gut says to go with a good Hisense or Sony panel unless I can import a TCL S405 somehow from America.

If most people vote monitor then I can just clear my desk or get a new one and go from there but then I would probably only get a 27 inch one unless I sit a bit back from it.

Sorry but what's the point of the poll? You don't need to create a poll if you are just asking for opinions.

    • I guess I was hoping people to start recommending specific tv's and monitors and then people voting on them.

Sorry I think I made this post on zero energy.

Doesn't feel complete or worded right.

      Looking for recommendations on screen

Picture quality has more to do with the LCD panel type (TN, IPS, VA) than if the display is a TV or monitor.

The biggest differences between a TV and a monitor is input lag and response time, which mainly affects gaming.

LCD monitors have between 1-10ms input lag/response time, whereas TVs have 4-16ms response and 12-50ms lag.

While image processing in name brand TVs (i.e. Sony) can improve picture quality, this is mostly disabled in PC mode.

If you are mainly using it as a PC monitor and only sitting 1m away, I personally would not buy a 55" TV.

  • i bought a cheap $500 4K tv in 2016. Because I live where theres good internet, 4K is mostly used for watching some youtube videos. Its not essential. Im still watching movies at 1080p or standard definition.
I browse websites at 1080p too, so i dont have to worry about small font.
The TV is going to last another 2 years, if that, and has started to make a low hum. Its cheap, i got what i paid for and already there is HDR and better quality features. This is always going to happen. I have done well out of my budget and kept satisfied, as its an asset i use everyday, and i'll definitely get my value out of it.
Ive played 2-3 games at 4K, including just cause 3 at medium detail. colour and smoothness was great. I cannot play AOE2HD at 4k because everything is too small.

Spend what your budget allows you to, knowing that you're going to sell the TV and buy another in 3-4 years.
As above, dont get a 55inch tv for that space. 43 inch will be fine. You're in a bedroom, and a 55inch or bigger is more suitable to a larger space. You should be 1m away from the screen per 10 inch of screen. So already too much.

What? This is by far where the biggest difference is, gaming on a monitor is vastly superior largely due to refresh rates, input lag and response times.

A 4K TV may suit you better based on how you're going to use it, but be aware it's inferior for gaming.

  • I think I should sleep
