Worth buying a 4TB Seagate Expansion Portable to shuck?

was looking to upgrade my computer storage for mass dumping of video recordings etc(end of the day if it fails its not the end of the world and not worth backing it up on another drive) and got this "suggestion" emailed from amazon

$123.84 Seagate 4tb Expansion portable

its apparently just your entry level 4tb seagate barracuda inside so was thinking about just getting 30 day trial of prime for free postage and shuck it.

any thoughts or should i just surf ozbargains in the shadows until a better deal/drive comes around?

If you don't mind about not shucking it, I'd recommend just getting the WD Elements 3TB for $72.99 Delivered with AMAZON20, good price per GB. But avoid if you definitely want to shuck, that's a pretty good price for a 4TB portable.

really would prefer to have it internal for easy access and setup of file directory path so i can just set and forget. not worrying about plugging it in. though the WD Elements is definitely cheaper. might consider seeing if any of my random half a dozen WD/Seagate 2TB portables are shuckable and replace it with that WD Elements 3TB

Wow I think that is the best price per terabyte hard drive I have ever seen or am I going out of my mind now haha lol

I swear I have never seen hard drives go for $24.33 a terabyte before but then I remember vaguely but very vaguely maybe some before in an Australia Post deal.. I could be wrong though as I assumed $30/terabyte was the best going rate bar gumtree haggling.

It's what I based my Amazon U.S. 8TB Seagate external hard drive purchase on (have bought like 3 so far).

    • just wondering what is shucking?

      • Dissecting a portable USB drive for its bare mechanical disk.

These drives however are not covered by warranty once they are separated from its original enclosure. They also tend to be 5400Rpm drives as opposed to the 7200RPM ones

  • I have done this before
Be aware you will not have warranty. If it is significantly cheaper go for it.
As far as I am aware, Seagate external drives have been "shuckable" for many years.
The only thing I would recommend is to get more than one, and run them in a raid array for redundancy (in Windows 8 and above you can use storage spaces, no need for any special hardware).

You also increase performance if you run a raid array of 3 or more (less data written per drive). The disadvantage of storage spaces is that is uses the proprietary REFS file format, you cannot 'undelete' or use recovery tools, and it only functions on a windows PC.

If you are handy with linux, ZFS is in many ways superior, but requires command line to setup and maintain, and cannot be read on windows directly (unless over a network).

  • Will this order occur import GST?

  • no? you referring to the tax starting in july?

  • So random. Went back to the Seagate hard drive and it went up in price by $0.20

    • That's the trick to let you come back to their website to check the price for a better price, and maybe browsing other items as well. 😉
