What Are My Rights as a Consumer if My Phone Breaks Soon after Repair?

Hello everybody.

Recently, I got my phone repaired by a 3rd party repairer after the screen just went out.

And just today, I took my phone out of my pocket to find that there are dead pixels in the middle of the screen like a line, with a vertical green line that stretches from the top left hand corner to the bottom left hand corner. There is no visible damage marks on the body of the phone itself, and the screen is protected by a screen protector and a case. I was not doing anything physical, and was sitting down for the majority of the day with the phone in my pocket.

What am I entitled to as a consumer? Am I able to get my phone repaired by the same person again for free, or do I need to buy a new phone?

Did you speak to the repairer? some of the 3rd party repairers have some sort of warranty on their work.

  • Have you spoken to the repairer yet ?

You’ll have at least a 90 day guarantee.

Take it back and ask them to do it again. If it still doesn’t work properly then ask for a refund.

highly doubt you'll get a refund. They've already provided a service, although a faulty one, they can't really refund you the money

      • they can't really refund you the money

They can and ethically (and probably legally also) they should either deliver service again and not a faulty service this time, or else offer refund.

    • I will be going to the repairer pretty soon.

Depends if it's broken because the repairs weren't good or caused the damage. Most repairs come with a warranty, and obviously the ACL covers repairs too so take it back to the repairer.

edit: Actually we'll need a lot more details. You said you had it fixed because the screen went out - they could have opened it up, reconnected the display to the circuit board, and the issue with the display now is from when your screen broke in the first place.

    • They replaced the glass and digitiser, as the touchscreen+display was not working.

      • In that case take it back because a line going down the display is definitely an issue with the display.

  • Sounds like a cracked screen?

    • Nope the screen is completely crack-free and scratch-free.

As part of your consume entitlements, first ask within Ozb, then try to contact ACCC.
If that all fails, try to talk to repairer?

  • Phones can show straight dead pixel lines even if it's not cracked or damaged externally. Ask the repairer if they used a genuine screen during the repairer process or some cheap $40 one off eBay.

  • Did you have just the glass replaced or the digitiser aswell?

    • Glass+digitiser

  • what phone?

    • phone is not fine

Edit: ergh.. I groaned after I typed this.. :/
