I found bad block on the NAS drive, should I RMA it?

I have a NAS drive (WD Red 8TB WD80EFZX-68UW8N0 - 3 years limited warranty) for about 6 months and installed it on a QNAP NAS.
It has started to play up, and I raised a support case with QNAP support, and they said the drive is corrupted and I need to run factory disk tool

I then run WD tool to do a full disk check, and it found bad blocks.
The tool then provided me with the repair option; I clicked it.
After the full repair, it says the drive is pass extended test.

Consider it was a bad block, do you think it is worth for me to RMA it? consider the drive is only 6 months

Thanks heaps!

  • If still under warranty you should ask about RMA.

Normally the drive transparently substitutes a spare block. It's a bad sign if it's visible to the host.

How many bad blocks? If more than the number of spare blocks then its days are numbered and you should at the very least prepare a spare drive to slot in.

    • Unfortunately, the tool does not state anything about the number of bad blocks: https://imgur.com/a/dHqPfzW

      • You need a tool that can read the SMART data.

        • Surprisingly, the quick scan says PASSED as well as the SMART test; but when I did the extended run, it failed.

  • Based on greenpossum response (and everyone who has voted), I have decided to RMA it.

The issue here is, I need to send it to WD RMA operations center in Vietnam….I guess I'll need to find an alternative drive while waiting for the drive to be back :(

    • Furthermore, I need to pay for the shipping cost too :(

  • I had this happen at work for a 3TB drive - just a few bad blocks (about 14) and sent it back to the supplier who tested it and replaced it after about 2 weeks.

I did have to purchase an additional drive to replace it while it was being tested / replaced. But I run 2 NASs here, so wasn't a problem to utilise the new disk and the replaced disk.

    • I was thinking to send it back to the seller (warehouse1) and noticed they have went to liquidation…so back to manual ship the drive to Vietnam then…

  • Definately RMA it, and get any data you consider valuable off it ASAP!
