Singapore - Where to Stay (Airport or City)

We arrive from Ho Chi Minh into Singapore (Changi) at 3.30pm on a Sunday and fly out to Sydney at 10.30am from Terminal 3 the following day.

Assuming we should be through Customs by 4.30pm, and need to be back at the airport at 8.30am, we will have 16 hours in total.

We've been to Singapore before so have seen a few of the sights, but would like to see the Gardens at the Bay and go to a hawker centre for a meal.

Where would be a good (cheap - under $100) place to stay? Last time stayed at Naumi Liora in Chinatown and loved it there, but apparently it's closed down now.

Thank you for your help.

Depending on how you are and who you're travelling with, it's possible to plan not to sleep at all.

For myself, the flight at 8:30am is way too early to be able to pay for and enjoy a good sleep. Im one of those who can't sleep properly because I worry about sleeping past my flight - especially with jetlag etc

I repack my carry-on with overnight stuff and everything else will stay checked-in (or check it into your next flight if you have to grab your luggage upon arrival). That way, I only have a backpack.

Then head out into the city and explore… either the hawker centres or head to marina bay sands to spend the night out.

If I'm tired enough, I'll sleep on the plane on the way home.

Alternatively, if you don't snore, you could try getting some sleep in the movie theatre in the airport.

try boutique hotels near Jalan Sultan street. there will be buses going to marina bay and this is less than 3km away from CBD.

Jalan is street, no need to say street/road/drive when there is Jalan at the front.

      • Hahaha, reminds me of the joke of which there are variants for other countries.

A: So your car broke down? Where are you?
B: Er, I'm on Jalan Sehala.

Ozbargain solution is cruise around Changi airport.

    • They have lounge chair almost-beds that are free to use.

      • Is this still suitable for those with toddlers?

  • how many people?

get an airbnb. train to and from the airport

last time in singapore I got a 1 bedroom apartment for $100 in Geylang.

in an apartment complex. huge pool.

don't go for the cheap hotels in Geylang. they are total and utter crap. I booked one (Hotel 101) a couple of years ago, checked in, went to the room, immediately checked out and went to

    • don't go for the cheap hotels in Geylang

I did this one trip for one night. I didn't find it too bad. It definitely felt a tad dodgy (and the area didn't help) but the beds were actually pretty comfortable.

At $55/night though, I definitely felt like I got a bargain and got what I paid for - and it wasn't that bad. I'd be willing to do it again for maybe a maximum of 2 nights.

      • yeah, maybe we picked a really shite hotel. it didn't help that we were with our young kids so… possibly I'm being overly cautious.

though, there was no hot water, the bath had hair in it, tiles were filthy. the bedroom had two double beds absolutely squeezed in to it. i.e. door barely opened. you had to walk side ways between the beds, etc.

Can you get real for a moment. There is nowhere in Singapore for $100 a night.

    • Can you back your statement up with something to support what you've said?

This is not true. It's just not "good quality", but if it's just for a night to sleep in..?

      Here are sample results

the hotels you recommended were literally in the redlight district and nowhere near marina bay sands. Not sure what quality you enjoy.

the hotels you recommended were literally in the redlight district

I did not "recommend" these hotels. These were the search results that came up when searching for hotels in Singapore for under $100 per night. I was simply responding to you saying that "there is nowhere in Singapore for $100 a night". Are you telling me the red light district of Singapore is not part of Singapore?

In addition, there are numerous properties that appeared that were not in Geylang.

          • Harbourfront
          • Queenstown
          • Jalan Besar
          • Balestier Road
          • East Coast
          • Lavender
          • Chinatown
          • Little India
          • Downtown

These were where some of the other property are located for under $100. Certainly not all in the red light district!

          nowhere near marina bay sands

Is Marina Bay Sands the only hotel in Singapore? Why didn't you say "There is no way you can get Marina Bay Sands for $100 a night" if that's what you had in mind?

Not sure what quality you enjoy.

If I'm in transit for less than 24 hours, I'd happily stay in the red light district for a night or two. I'm not so needy that I need Marina Bay Sands everywhere I go.

  • Thanks for all your help. It's for two adults 60+. Like Bobbified I find it hard to sleep knowing I have to get up early but I don't think I could last all night with no sleep at all.

I've found a few hotels in Little India and Chinatown but just wondering if they are more difficult to get to. I don't remember the layout of the city at all from our previous trip.

    • With the MRT it's easy to get to LI and Chinatown. But for 2 it might be better to get Grabcar rides to the door. Especially as there are minimum recharges for the travel pass and depending on which one you get the card may not be refundable.

  • I tried one of the capsule hotels last year. Not terrible for the cost and you get to say you've done it.

    Hi OP,

We spent 3 nights there a few months ago, and decided on a place in Little India.

MRT is very cheap and efficient, so anywhere near a station is good.

    Enjoy hawker food!

  • Honestly it's probably better to stay the airport so you can just get up in the morning and walk across to the terminal. No rushing about and dealing with transport (even though it's very good there).

The Crown is a fabulous hotel which is reasonably cheap (I think it cost me $170 last time I stayed there).

  • Thank you for all your help. I booked a 3 star hotel called NuVe for $91 (I AM an Ozbargainer after all) close to Sultan Mosque, Bugis MRT station, Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. The reviews were very good.

    • That sounds pretty good!!

  • How is public transport in Singapore between midnight and 5am?

    • Trains stop running but you can get around with Grabcar or Uber.

      • No more Uber in Singapore anymore. Your rideshare options (in order of activity):

        • Grab
        • Ryde
        • Kardi
        • Jugnoo

Some buses still run between midnight and 5am

If you want grab to be a bit cheaper, you can do the following:

        • Use grabhitch to book a ride in advance (10 mins+), but harder to get than regular grab
        • Use grabshare if you're not short on time and are in a group of 2 people or less
  • I know not $100, but have stayed here and is under $200 a night - Village Hotel Katong by Far East Hospitality, looks like you can get a room for about $175 at the moment.

Very good location and has buses outside. Taxis are cheap to Orchard road or surrounds.
