Given my terrible experiences trying Cathay. I would not recommend them.
In my opinion, Cathay is the reason why this is cheap. Not necessarily a bargain.
I've got the reverse personal experience. In the last 2 weeks I've used them SYD-HKG return as well as HKG-BKK return both in Y. Plane was 95% full on both trips. Yet crew were friendly and efficient. Y meals were average (as are all Y meals). Flight was on time and hand Australian first officers on both trips. My preference to HKG is with CX over QF provided pricing is right.

QF for me any day. Never had any trouble with them. I'll pay the extra if I get what I want.
CX has upset my clients and myself too many times to want to go back.
Not really a ringing endorsement of CX…. must have had pretty bad experiences with QF eh?
I'd choose Cathay and Singapore Airlines over QF economy any day of the week. Asian airlines (not the cheap scoot etc) have better service
mind sharing what problem you had with cathay?
Problems…
* Terrible food (even by airline standards).
* Rude staff at HKG (more than one occasion).
* Cancelled some flights on me.
* Cancelled some flights on my clients.
* Blamed me for not checking if flight(s) still existed.
Every airline has terrible food. I don't think I've ever enjoyed an in flight meal.
I fly often. My preferred airlines (in order) are Singapore, Virgin and Qantas.
will Qantas following through?
