Best VPN Service for Australia?

Hi Ozbargain

What VPN service do you suggest I use? There has been multiple discussions in the past with various deals but there is no consensus on which one is the ideal one.

My criteria for the ideal service in the right order is:

  1. Data security i.e. does not store or share any user data (depends on which country its stored?)
  2. Ease of use (in terms of changing countries etc)
  3. Speed
  4. Price

I have been using Tunnelbear in the meantime and its very easy to use and the speed and price is not bad, but I have been told its not the most secure and they would share data when requested.

I would love your feedback so I can sign up today.

    NordVPN and ExpressVPN always get rave reviews, believe them or not. Any users here that can testify to their speed in Australia?

      Never had any issues with ExpressVPN's speed when using my normal server location; I've been a customer for a couple of years. Strangely enough, when I used a newly created VPN server location in my state(WA), I had a heap of issues with speed. However, I've never had issues with using MEL/SYD.

      NordVPN had atrocious speeds the last time I used their service. I've been using ExpressVPN for the past few months for Netflix US and haven't had any issue streaming 4K HDR.

    I use torguard. Have done for about three years now. No issues. It's fast and stable on their Melbourne server. I don't torrent directly on it, but using sftp I max out my connection using segmented downloading.

      I'm using Torguard too. Excellent service. Shame that they had to remove their China server.

        Yeah. I tried the China server a couple of times to access Youku content but it was so slow. Presumably due to the gfw.

    No VPN is 100% secure. Even if if they say they don't log traffic (which itself is self-proclaimed and non-provable promise), they will begin to if the spooks request them to. Doesn't matter who the home country of the "provider" is. A VPN is useful but don't be thinking it makes you anonymous. No-one is truly anonymous unless they use extreme tools and methods. And even then who really knows nowadays with the tech industry hand-in-hand with spooks, not to mention bad actors who have zero day exploits which are sold at a premium even to the spooks themselves.
    Best bet is to assume you are being monitored and if not presently, then you can be retrospectively.
    Just don't do the wrong things unless it's something innocuous like avoiding geoblocking.

      I read some PC World articles I think it was, on that some are audited, is that no proof enough…?

    Why I say retrospectively, is the US govt has been storing data on a phenomenal scale for a long while but haven't had the tools to properly analyse it.

    Those tools are on their way so just be aware that the internet is a cesspool of information gathering in all spheres (including the so-called darknet).
    It's unfortunate but the Internet is no longer free and anonymous.

      Mullvad seems to be the one for the seriously paranoid but it's expensive, not user-friendly and slow.

    I've tried a few recently, but only for a very specific usecase - needed to be able to download cartoons via the BBC iPlayer app for my daughter.
    Tried Windscribe which i get free 80GB data monthly via an OzB deal from a while back. THis worked on iPad but not on Android for some reason, and wasnt super fast.
    Tried GooseVPN (paid) but the UK server wouldnt let me connect to iPlayer.
    Tried PrivateVPN (paid) and this seemed to work for iPlayer well. Not lightning fast but fast enough, and not super expensive.
    As said though, needed it for 1 specific thing, wasnt considering privacy or security, just location masking.

      Noob at this but is there a risk for signing for 5 years? I got email offer for $49 but only 2 years. Works out about $0.7 more per mnth but I guess less risk in case the company goes bust?

    I am using ExpressVPN and NordVPN. Express gives a slightly faster speed, but NordVPN lets you choose the exact server you want to connect.
    Both are based outside fourteen eyes and claims to not keep logs.

    I was tossing up between ExpressVPN and NordVPN due to the great reviews found everywhere. After seeing a new deal on TorGuard and seeing it recommended here a view times, I decided to look a little into them and found their speeds to be rated average and within the "five eyes".
