AGL electricity deal - 42% discount on savers plan

Hey first time poster here - as I am never quick to any bargains!

But I rang AGL today to discuss my electricity bill and see if they could offer me a better discount on my electricity as I was going to swap companies.

I am on the AGL savers plan - single rate meter and was previously on a 35% discount (which is currently above the current offer) and they now offered me a rate of 42% discount. I had to go to the customer resolutions team to ask for a rate. This discount is only applied on the usage but bring my peak charge down to 0.1682 per kWh which is pretty good.

I also asked for a rate on the gas and I am on the Savers plan with now a 34% discount on the usage.

The customer service person told me that they had only been offering this deal at customer request since 1st July.

Hope that helps other bargain hunters!

Useless info because no rates are mentioned as per usual. It's like it's taboo to mention the real price of electricity, just mention discounts on some figure no one knows. I can't tell what the price is here, what a bargain!

    • my peak charge down to 0.1682 per kWh

      .1682 +42% = peak rate =.238844

Probably not right. Calling mathnerd now

      • Probably not right

        .1682 / (1 - 42%) = peak rate =.29

      • 0.1682 /0.58 = $0.29/kWh

        • 1 minute too late

        • @Woodinski:

I prefer my formula. Just spoke to AGL but they won't use my calculations.

@TightBottom: Hello! Yes Peak rate of 0.29kWh down by 42%. But had to go to the customer resolutions to get it! :)

  • I've only just signed up for AGL / 34% off Electricity / 28% off Gas deal…. guessing they wouldn't let me upgrade to the 42% if I kick up a fuss?

    • I saw the 30% off Electricity and asked to sign up for that (previously on 21%, wow so ripped off). Didn't cross my mind to check Ozb (I KNOW!) and found out there's a campaign for VIC with 34% off! Went on AGL chat to kick up a fuss … But the guy on the chat gave me 35% off + $50 credit though and not 42% :(

      • campaign link has a better discounts (28% and 20% vs agl official website 20% and 13%), but call back from very faraway

They can offer 42% off because their rates are so ridiculously high in the first place. Crunch the numbers and you'll be able to easily find other companies with lower discounts that are actually cheaper than their 42% off offer.

  • Wish WA had competitors for electricity šŸ˜•

    • Careful what you wish for - all that "competitors" have done for Victoria is result in higher electricity rates for everyone.

This is really why setting a default rate for electricity prices is important.

This plan has 17% of 'apples' rate, for both usage and supply, but only if you pay on time.
But this plan is 24% of 'oranges' rate, but only for usage, and only direct debit an a 12 month plan.

I see this is a key recommendation by the ACCC, can't come soon enough.

  • So maths is a useless subject that won't be utilised in later life?? No wonder the power companies are able to get away with this ridiculous discount marketing. I just crunched the numbers in a spreadsheet from a number of suppliers here in SA. It's not difficult. The cheapest option is 82.6% of the most expensive option for my typical bill. I've been a little rusted on with AGL - reckon I'll be changing.

    • Update on this - I rang AGL before changing and was made an unsatisfactory offer that was no better than their listed deals. Once I had made a decision to change, AGL rang me back and offered a 20% discount on their usage and supply charges for both electricity and gas. That made them competitive, but I am walking. It seems that 20% off is obtainable - and, importantly, off the supply charges, which are not usually discounted in their offers.

      • Who did you end up moving across to?

  • What is the most discount for NSW people receiving for AGL?

I got a notification the plan that I signed up last year is about to end and they will be automatically placing me on another plan

Currently receiving AGL Savers gas (25% discount) and AGL Savers electricity (32% discount).

    • AGL now has the essential - no BS discount from 0.29 cents. straight 0.20 per kwH in Sydney. they have up the supply charge which is small (<10% in my caseļ¼‰compared to usage.

  • Hi QLD people, What discount are you getting for AGL savers electricity?

  • Just search AGL Discount in Google and their campaign pages for the different states come up.

    For example https://www.google.com/search?q=agl+discounts

    VIC = https://campaign.agl.com.au/landing/residential/jm/v0203/?stā€¦
    NSW = https://campaign.agl.com.au/landing/residential/jm/?state=NSā€¦

If you are happy with AGL after doing your research, these are of course these are rates for suckers (less suckers than those using the homepage offers at least). If they are not playing ball on the phone then simply sign up to another provider to get the ball rolling with their retention team to get the actual best deal. It's a pain for both sides but it's not a lot of work to save $ over the year. No different from ringing your mortgage provider and insurance company and demanding the best deal every 6-12 months.

    Hope that helps.

  • Energy noob here. Is it the same plans as their website?

Is it worth switching from my Current to either Flexible/Super saver?
What is Fixed rate vs Variable rate?

My Current Plan vs AGL FLEXIBLE SAVER vs SUPER SAVER

    General Usage (cents/kWh)
    26.158 vs 22.660 vs 21.197

    Supply charge (cents/day)
    81.466 vs 95.590 vs 89.419

(Also a Gas noob, but dunno how to read all the numbers…)
