Do You Clean up after Yourself at McDonald's (or Other Fast Food Restaurants)?

Hey OzBargain, just wanting to settle a question I had. How many of you clean up after yourself when eating at McDonald's or another fast food restaurant. I had this discussion with a friend who believed that while it is technically the job of the staff to keep the restaurant clean, as a customer it is important to be respectful and clean up your own mess. What do you think?

    No, it's the employees' job

Yes, I am. For 2 reasons:
    - I don't like the feeling that will have someone has to clean my mess.
    - I want to teach my kids. "If you made a mess, you have to clean it"

  • If it is McDonald's, I always ask that they serve my food on a plate with no packaging. Coffee is also ordered in a mug, not a takeaway cup. When they do stuff this up (and it's often since the company and its employees tend to value money and convenience over everything else), I take all the rubbish with me and compost (leftover food, used napkins in summer), burn (used napkins in winter and soiled paper items) and recycle (plastic items, unsoiled paper bags and cardboard) as appropriate. It's shameful that other people don't do this.

Basically, you shouldn't ever end up with 'rubbish' that needs to go to landfill.

Somebody has to generate enough work for Maccas to keep the business case of hiring a person.
If everybody cleans up after themselves they would catch on and fire somebody as they are now redundant.

  • I always cleanup after myself and my family, even if we're in a rush.
Except, when we find the table/chairs unclean, due to the last people not being cleanedup by the staff — if they don't see the plates/trays, the staff will skip the table and not wipe it down, leaving a grime-streaked mess of godknowswhat for the next person, and the next… until the end of the day. Sadly, staff don't always do things efficiently or carefully enough, so they sometimes need some prompting. In a restaurant with table service, I would ensure the waitstaff properly wipe the table before we sit, but that's not always practical with fast food.

I don't leave it a mess but it's there job to put it in the bin. I work in fast food myself and don't have a problem with this, it's part of my job to clean up

  • as a McDonalds employee i always ensure no matter which fast food chain i go to, i clean my mess and make my friends. with the argument "its their job" 9/10 times they have 20 other jobs at the same time. From a non-employee perspective, mama didnt raise no grub, you make a mess, you clean the mess

  • I tend to clean up after myself. Mind you I dont do a wipe down or anything, i just grab anything i had or used and throw them out. For me its, these guys who work here have enough problems and deal with a lot as it is, might as well be nice to them.

  • Might go Balls of steel style back through the drive through if they mix up the order.

    isn't littering creating employment opportunities??

  • All this talk about maccas makes me want to get a custard pie.

  • Yes, and I cannot stand people who just leave all their mess behind. How much effort does it take to quickly dump it in the bin?

    • That's actually how jobs are made. When somebody hates seeing something or doing something, they turn it into a job which somebody is willing to do something when they are being paid to do so.

That's likely one of the reasons why they place money locks on trolleys to try to "entice" the customer to bring the trolley back.
Maybe Maccas should install a sensor and receipt printer at the bin, and every time you throw something out it entices you with a offer.

  • Yes, this is clean Australia not dirty polutted Manilla. Those in Australia who don't clean after themselves are not cultured enough with poor social intelligence.

  • How the hell is littering creating jobs. Itll just get passed onto whoever is not busy and Increase workload on someone already hired.

    • According to the people who use the logic, all you need to do is litter so much their existing staff can't keep up!

    • What if 90% of people don’t clean up (instead of 90 who do clean up after themselves), Maccass would be a mess and management can either have dissatisfied customers or hire another teen to make sure the restaurant isn’t a mess.

Just playing that stupid devils advocate, I don’t agree with it, it’s the same crowd who is willing to wait for a checkout chick when self serves are all free.

    • Technically speaking, if a Maccas is littered enough and the head office receives enough complaints, the head office will likely put sanctions on that store to hire somebody to clean it up.

It becomes a image of Maccas and obviously they don't want that image tainted due to a store not keeping themselves clean.
Imagine all the publicity that Maccas will get if somebody littered a store then took pics and posted it on Facebook, they will respond straight away with a press announcement……

Like a trolley guy, I know Costco actually hires a trolley guy. Imagine everybody pushing their trollies back, you just made 1 guy redundant, and imagine that guy was your son. You just made your son redundant!

Comes down to the usual solution for any problem with project or store management, if $hit hits the fan, just throw more resources at it. Same with people working in IT, if something is running slow, just throw more hardware at it.

  • Yes, because I'm not a (profanity).

(Actually I am, but not in this context).

  • Had a counter meal down the pub today thought I'd better clean my act up after reading this and threw the plate schooner glass and cutlery in the industrial bin across the car park after I'd finished.
Management from the Broken arms bar don't have the same view as the majority in this thread so I found out.

  • I do it out of courtesy. I put all the rubbish into tray, empty tray at the bin and return tray to rack.

I'm not going to wipe the table though. Not like I can anyway.

  • Yes.
I feel in today's society people don't have much respect and consideration for others.
Just minor things that you see day to day like people driving like idiots on the roads, not letting each other in & littering.
IMO you should try and leave your environment better than you found it.

  • I always, always pick up after myself. Not only at MacDonalds, but anywhere. If I’m at a restaurant I’ll take my plate to the side of the counter and let them know it’s there. I know of people who actively leave their stuff for cleaners to take care of, citing it’s an employees responsibility, and surprise surprise, they’re also a lazy slob in real life who is always having people pick up after them.

In my mind someone who isn’t capable of picking up their shit at a fast food restaurant probably isn’t a particularly competent human being in general.

It’s not even about encouraging people to have jobs, that’s just BS, any decent person is going to take care of their own mess.

  • I’m happy to clean up after eating at maccas

I’m happy to fill up my own car.

I’m happy to pack my own groceries at the supermarket.

    Any other questions?

    • Which way does your toilet paper sit?

      • under

        • scruncher

        • @allegiance86: The first few wipes I use 3 or 4 squares. After that it's two. I'm no scruncher thanks.

It just dispenses easier when under.

  • I only clean up if the store bothers to make it relatively painless for me to do so. I would say 7 times out of 10 the bins are overflowing and/or the bin lid is disgustingly covered in oily fingerprints, other peoples leftover food, slime and saliva.

  • Yeah, besides clearing my tray, I will usually wash the toilet and also take a bath there.

    • in that order? I bathe first before I wash the toilets.

  • Sometimes- if it's a clean restaurant ill clean it myself or send my kids to put rubbish in the bin.
I was at Liverpool The Grove plaza the other day, rubbish everywhere on each table, I was there for atleast 90 minutes (after eating and watching the kid's play), it was still the same after I left. Staff everywhere and no one bothered cleaning up!

  • When in Rome…In Australia, YES you must. In Japan, yes. In Singapore, sometimes. In the States, no.

  • Yeah becasue you are scum if you don't, I mean it's not hard.

Just leaving your trash on the table is almost as bad as the people I see just chucking wrappers and bottles on the footpath, I mean how lazy can people be, if I don't see a bin i'll take my sh!t with me.

  • Most of the time.

  • Yes. Vote count giving me faith in humanity.

  • Yes I do and I look at others in disgust that just walk out

  • I always put my rubbish away but I noticed that the only way the table gets a wipe is when people leave their rubbish on it. Otherwise, they never clean it.

  • I do, because I'm not a maggot.

  • Statistically speaking, i call bullshit on poll results because that ratio is far from observable evidence

    • OzBargain isn't representative of Australian society. That much should be obvious considering how much credit card debt is out there…

      • Lol. I wonder how many people on ozbargains are actually in debt. They just couldn't pass up all those bargains

  • Yes, always

  • Clean up after yourself, don’t be a grub

  • I always do. It's respectful and a good habit to have.

It is astounding that we need to even have a post about whether this is right or wrong. Just clean up your rubbish, it takes 2 seconds.

The silly argument that someone else will clean it or that it will keep someone in a job is one of the most nonsensical arguments I have heard (and there are many on Ozbargain). So on this basis:
    - should we not flush toilets as someone else will clean it and it will make McDonalds (or other restaurants) employ more staff.
    - are those that do this OK with going into a restaurant full of rubbish everywhere when staff are busy elsewhere and not able to sit anywhere due to rubbish all on tables.
    - are they OK with waiting longer because the staff need to clean tables or paying more to employ more staff?
    - are you OK with inconveniencing others with your rubbish if staff do not clean it?

I just think it is very selfish, lazy, etc. and it's in the same bucket as people who have dogs and don't clean up after their them.

Although small, I think generally things like cleaning up after yourself, returning trolleys etc. is a true reflection of overall character and consideration for others.

    • should we not flush toilets as someone else will clean it and it will make McDonalds (or other restaurants) employ more staff.

When have someone been employed for this? This argument is grasping at straws.

are those that do this OK with going into a restaurant full of rubbish everywhere when staff are busy elsewhere and not able to sit anywhere due to rubbish all on tables.

Not ok. There have been times I've left such a restaurant, and if enough people leave because there's not enough clean seating 2 things may happen: they get quiet enough that staff can start cleaning or they hire more staff.

are they OK with waiting longer because the staff need to clean tables or paying more to employ more staff?

Paying for a service is part and parcel of it all. You think that young guy/girl taking your order at the counter is doing it for fun? Also, those self-service-ordering-kiosks aren't there because they improve the ambiance. Imagine if those things become the norm: what's the difference to just having a vending machine instead? Together with a policy that customers clear their own tables, all you need is one staff for a whole restaurant to fill said vending machines. You save $2 on your meal, and pay more in centrelink money instead. Definitely sounds like the way to go.

are you OK with inconveniencing others with your rubbish if staff do not clean it?

Would you dine at a non-fast-food restaurant that waiters don't clean their tables? Also, look at answer for Q2.

And while you might argue they're in the same bucket, the biggest difference is that nowhere does it say when you dine at a fast food place that you're required to clean up, but you're legally required to clean up after your dog.

too much hassle to make quotes on a phone.
        Anyway.

Employees for cleaning toilets are cleaners? That is a job and there are some people out there who do unspeakable things to public toilets.

That seems counter productive. "Let's promote people's laziness by not purchasing from this store to reduce their profits and force them to employee more people just to clean up after me."

Not sure what that vending machine bit is about but me personally (barely go to maccas every 6 months anyway) have never used those self checkout machines.

Non fast food restaurant and a fast food "restaurant" are completely different. They give you all the tools to clean up after yourself, plastic cutlery, paper wrapping, plastic trays, plastic cups and even a paper bag you can put it all in to throw out all at once. As opposed to a non fast food restaurant which is ceramic plates, metal cutlery etc that needs to be washed. I wouldn't even care if it was actually normal practice at a restraurant for the customer to stack up all their plates and bring them to some sort of counter for the staff to collect and wash.

  • I clean up after myself, but it gets pretty frustrating time and time again going into McDonald's where every table is strewn with piles of rubbish and I also have to clean up BEFORE myself!

    • I draw the line at cleaning up other people's rubbish. I'll take my own to the bin but I'll leave whatever was there before I got there on the table still.

  • I used to clean it up…

However, I no longer do. I'm sick of getting to a 'clean' table that hasn't been wiped, that when you have a second look is covered in oil etc.

I've noticed that most tables don't get wiped unless there is visibly stuff on it, so I usually leave my bag there
rather than take it to the bin. Next time, Watch the cleaners only wipe where they pick up food next time you go have a quick lunch.

I know this isn't popular opinion on here, but I wish more Ppl would leave their rubbish!

    • In the city they get that busy there ends up being 5x people's crap on it, no where else to sit, they then 'ignore' all the rubbish pilling up on the table because someone else is sitting there. So you end up with only dirty garbage filled tables and if you don't take one of those you get nothing because 2 seconds later someone else will take it if you don't.

  • Yes, because they're often too busy to clean up and it's other customers who are inconvenienced, not the staff or owner if I don't throw my own rubbish in the bin. Most people do seem to clean their crap up, but it annoys the hell out of me when all the empty tables are full of crap, half the time with things that people didn't even buy at McDonalds!

I'd much prefer they had the staff wipe down all the tables properly between customers but I'm not going to be an arsehole to others just because they don't have enough staff.

All yall mofo's that don't clean up after yourselves need that new upbringing. Don't cost nothing for some manners.

  • People who don't throw their debris into the trash are trash themselves.

  • +1

It's honestly just subconscious actions, you put your rubbish in the bin, you put the trolley in the trolley bay, don't throw your rubbish out the car window on the highway. Just easy stuff that you don't even realise is an issue until you try to pull into a car park and see it stacked with abandoned trolleys

    • Sadly with that thinking, you just made somebody's kid working at Costco redundant. Since I know Costco hires a trolley person.

      • +1

Everywhere hires trolley people. The only reason why the need to hire trolley people in the first place is because people don’t put their trolleys away

      • +1

Are you saying that I should congratulate the woman who put her trolley in front of my car the other day while I was sitting inside of it about to drive off, because “Costco hires kids to collect trolleys”

They still need someone to collect the trolleys from the bays and bring them to the store

    • They're subconscious to people who were brought up to have manners…. guess that's not everyone.

  • Yes I do pick up after myself. Even my son started picking up after himself and others, at 3yo.

  • Pretty sure there's a direct correlation between Maccas rubbish leavers, and those that don't pickup clothes they drop off hangers in clothes shops…

    • But they're creating J0bS!

  • Depends.

If the store is already a mess, dirty tables and shit everywhere, then tbh I ain't gonna bother if management clearly doesn't either.

If the food is good, the service is good, the place is good, etc. If shit is good, then I'll be good too. As they say, what goes around comes around.
