Sir Walter Turf maintenance from the start

We just had turf laid in our backyard.

It was explained that it needs to be watered 3 times per day for the first few weeks.

Is there anything else that could help the grass grow/sow in Melbourne’s cold climate?

Surely there is a feed that would help in this initial phase?

Or is watering enough?

    • I was sure there was a way to find out information using a computer, but had no idea how to search for that information.

Probably not worth it to fertilise etc in Winter, will probably just burn it.

    • True. Wonder if there is a feed that is less harsh

      • Seasol isn't an NPK fertiliser but can promote root growth. Try that

      • Maybe a Seasol for Lawns or something?….but yeah I wouldn't be going too hard. Don't want to kill your fancy new grass before it even gets a chance :)

    • Yup. More fertilizer is not necessarily always better OP.

  • Yeah, reckon you are wasting your time feeding it in winter in cold southern states.
Think you should have waited till warmer growing season 🙏!
I put some of this down in a warmer climate and ensured a good underneath soil mix was laid first.
Best growth & low maintenance I've ever had, compared with other type lawns. I had down.

  • Wait until the first 2 weeks of spring (or until the spring weather change becomes apparent to you) and feed the grass with Yates AgriBoost dynamic lifter….Your sir walter grass is sleeping until September and it's best not to disturb it other than water IIMO

Agree - also i wont water it 3 times a day - may be once is ok and that too when it is relatively warm day !!

With the cool and no sun - water cannot evaporate as quickly plus the dew !

Ask the people you purchased/laid the grass? They'd likely know their product more than us..

  • Grass doesn't grow much in winter, it was probably not the best time to put grass down (end of winter is best).

Make sure you fertilise it monthly.

  • I put down about 90sqm of Sir Walter in my backyard in late April and it responded quite well. After a few weeks I gave it a spray with Seasol and have cut it twice since. I suspect you are better off waiting until spring or else it will take longer to establish, mine took at least 3 weeks before it started showing signs of establishment and that was in autumn. Also make sure you do the required prep like lawn mix and pre-weed removal.

I had the same grass installed about 1 year ago. One thing they did not tell me was regarding top soil. Some of the edge of the rolled grass are elevated off the soil and probably die if they cant get roots down, I filled in all the gaps between grass with a topsoil/chook poo mix and it worked absolute wonders for the health of the grass as well as filling in the gaps between rolls and the gaps between grass roots/soil. I noticed about a week or 2 after topsoil was thrown on, the dull grey look of the grass turned to a lush green.

  • Try not to let it get too wet until it starts to grow. Spring time as others have suggested, don't expect it to do much before then.

Don't cut it, no need to fertilise it, I would cut down on the 3x day watering. It's winter, leave that for summer.

    • Definitely don't mow it for at least 6-8 weeks, particularly in winter because it will take longer to establish. No need to fertilize, just water 2 times a day.

Even 2 times a day may be pushing it for winter.

        • Yes. You only need to make sure it doesn’t dry out and that will depend more on drainage than sunshine in winter.
