Marine Tax Claimables

Besides the basic clothes, sunglasses etc, what are other things that can be claimed on my tax when I do shift work on a boat. It doesn’t seem fair that I’m in a high tax bracket and never get a tax refund at tax time. Any advice is welcome.

I don't need to work on my tug

  • How can you claim basic clothes? I thought you could only claim compulsory work specific uniforms.

Advice: Go and see a tax agent, or search the ato website.

Why isn’t it fair that you don’t get a tax refund And why do you feel entitled as a high earner? You are subjected to the same tax rates and income brackets as every other person.

If you want a tax refund, as your employer to take more out of you pay in payg

No offence but your logic is retarded, I gather this is your first ever tax return and hate paying tax.

  • You can claim a deduction for any legitimate expense you incurred in relation to your employment.

If you did not incur any expense, then you can not claim a deduction.

You should be grateful that you do not incur any expense in relation to your job. For every $100 tax refund you get, it likely means you spent $300 of your own money, so you are worse off by $200. Getting a big tax refund means your income is actually lower than what you are paid, so you are just getting back some of your own money they withheld from you. It is not some cash bonus to be excited about.

Nonetheless, some suggestions that could relate to you:

    • Union fees
    • Mobile phone use for work
    • Safety equipment that you purchased yourself
    • Safety clothing
    • Training or education that relates to your work that you paid yourself.
