Recommend a 1080ti Prebuilt from The eBay 25% off Sale Please?

Hi All,

A friend wants to get into 4k gaming, and is interested in a prebuilt system.

I recommended he wait for a 25% off sale as I've seen 4k 1080ti systems for $1500-2000.

His budget is around $2000, and anything between $1500 and $2500 final cost is doable.

I am pointing him in this direction for $1500 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-4-Core-i7-7700K-4-5GHz-8GB….

I realise this is no SSD, below current gen CPU, and only 8GB RAM, however seems great bang for buck.

Or this direction for $2325 https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/i7-8700K-4-7GHz-2TB-500GB-NVMe-S…

But i think he can get the SSD and extra RAM if necessary for way less than the difference (yes I realise CPU also differs). So this second system is not as good bang for buck perhaps.

Can anyone advise on whether any other machines come recommended instead? Or which upgrades might be worthwhile?

The list of prebuilt 1080ti systems here: https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Desktops-All-In-Ones/171957/i.ht…

Warm regards,
Oz.

  • Don't prebuild and build your selves?
Squeeze out some more $$ for better parts

    • He can't be bothered / lacks the ability - and I cant be bothered helping him to be honest. In the past these deals have come up as within the region of a home build, without the hassle of sourcing parts, shipping cost, hoping nothing DOA, etc. Also the current price of a 1080ti makes me question whether a home built system would be cheaper than $1500.

      • All GPUs have dropped in price lately, there was a 3 fan 1080 Ti for 850 or so a few weeks back.

        • Roger that - have been spying them for myself - but I'm going to hold out on my ancient 970 build until I cant stand it anymore.

Any thoughts on that $1500 system though? There are plenty of downsides - blower, PSU, not fastest RAM, but $1500 bucks!?!

      • and I cant be bothered helping him to be honest.

Except you're writing a whole damn blog post about which parts he should buy?

        • +1

Building a pc takes longer than ozbargain on the toilet.

  • Is he using it for anything else other than gaming? If not, get basically the cheapest pre-built that comes with a 1080Ti, add your own SSD and RAM (if needed), and you'll be set. Just be sure to confirm the actual brand and model of all the components so you'll know what you're dealing with, especially for the PSU. I can't overstate how often pre-builts cheap out on the PSU (because it's not 'glamorous') and people don't notice until something goes wrong. At the very least make sure it's an 80Plus Gold model.

    • Thanks for the input. Nothing else besides gaming (and browsing, but not simultaneously).

Will do re the PSU - I'll look into the tier list on Toms, what they charge for an upgrade, and what I can get separately (seemed excessive when I looked at the upgrade prices, will have to do more research tonight).

      • Yeah, I've looked at the PC Byte systems (not this particular one) and they're OK. The totals usually come out to around how much you'd get buying parts yourself (though not waiting for sales throughout the year), except with inferior brands. But they do put it together for you and install software and test it, so there's that. Their upgrades can be a bit expensive though.

        • Understood. Good to hear my thoughts aren't too far wrong.

        • @ozbjunkie:

          Is he in a rush?
There's a very high chance that GTX 1070 Ti, 1080, 1080 Ti's are actually going to become MORE expensive in the near future because the demand is there but the supply has stopped. The reason for this is because Nvidia is manufacturing their next-gen Graphics Cards (GTX 11-series).

Normally I don't recommend someone to dive right in, but with AMD so far behind in the competition, and your friend's insistence on 4K gaming… it might be the "right" move to get a GTX 1180 instead. But its gonna cost ya.
If budget is a concern, you should try to get a cheap/used GTX 1070… it has enough VRAM and Performance to do 4K Gaming, but it cannot do it at Ultra Settings you'll have to dial it down to Medium Settings (which look great, better than consoles, but not as good at small-details like hair, trees, fingers, explosions etc etc). You might even be able to throw it in a Pre-built system that you buy on eBay with a 25% off promotion.

        • @Kangal:

Yeah kinda in a rush. In the sense that he is sick of waiting and I'm sick of him asking for advice without pulling the trigger.

Id love to believe the 1180 is coming soon, in reasonable quantities, for reasonable prices, but I'm skeptical.

I realise 1080ti can struggle on ultra at 4k, maybe hitting only 50fps, but I can't see the 1180 systems coming in under 2000 bucks, even if I scour the deals page and build it for him.

Will eat my words if I'm wrong. But he will be too busy gaming to notice.

        • @ozbjunkie:
          "Depends".

The GTX 1070 Ti has no trouble keeping a Median 70fps on Ultra Settings at 4K resolution.
So a 1080 Ti will be even smoother.

The key is to use Ultra Settings, without wasting resources on "crap settings".
There are details that you can turn down slightly, which doesn't affect the visual quality, but affect the frame-rate immensely. GTA V is a good example of this. I recommend you read up on people's recommended settings to take out the most performance from your hardware, and of course experiment with it yourself.

In most cases, dropping the settings even further down: to High Settings… will yield you with even smoother framerates without affecting the visual quality much/at all. Although YouTube videos don't really do much justice to this, because of the heavy compression Google uses. Unless you watch more professionally made videos like DigitalFoundry.

        • @Kangal:

Yep will take that onboard, thanks for the input

  • Just bought this for <$740

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lenovo-Legion-Y520T-i7-16GB-128G…

    Last one in stock though

    • +1

Well done! Whack in a new GPU and never leave the man cave.

  • I would go with $2325 as for that price i'd want the pc to at least look decent but for that money I'd rather build it myself and customize it to what I want exactly.
The $1500 will get the job done fine just means you'll have to definitely invest in a SSD (good specials on ATM) and/or better cooling for the case/cpu if needed.

    • Yeah getting him the 1tb 860 for $245, missed the $225 price war this arvo.

      Thanks for the input.

      • —-EDIT—-

        It's a GTX1080, not GTX1080Ti

        —-/EDIT—-

If you're spending that much, get this one:

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alienware-Aurora-R7-Gaming-PC-De…

AU $2,249.25 with eBay Plus code "PROXY".

So pretty much ignore this comment. But damn does that Alienware look smexy. Plus you won't be stuck with IT support duties because Dell is good about that. Still, 1080 vs 1080Ti is a big gap. Ah well…

        • Yeah it's gotta be the 1080ti, the 1080 can't hack it at 4k ultra 60fps.

I'll do tech support as long as it's spaced out and involves many beers and pizzas.
