NBN Modem/Router Recommendations for 100/40 FTTP Connection

Looking for a new modem/router for my NBN connection. I currently have a D-Link DIR-850L but looking to upgrade.

Ethernet has only been run from a point in the garage next to the NBN box to a point in the study where the router will be located. I have an ethernet cable from the NTD to the wall port, then ethernet cable from study port to router.

I am currently on a 100/40 connection but will potentially drop back to the 50/20 tier.

Budget around $200, but can stretch it.

TP-Link AC3150 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router is one I have been looking at.

Any recommendations?

  • TP-Link C3150 v2 /end

  • Firstly you don't need a modem, FTTP only requires a router. Secondly what do you want in the new router? What are the problems with the old one?

    • I thought this was the case but been reading other threads and modem/routers were being recommended.
Current router is having three to four drop outs per day, I switched over to an older TP Link router and experienced no drop outs over the course of a few days.

Hence something appears to be wrong with the D-link router and as such looking for something new.

No requirement for VOIP or anything. Simply looking for something suitable for a 4 bedroom, single storey house. 1 year old house.

At any given time there could be 4 laptops connected, two chromecasts, one smart tv streaming netflix, playstation 4 online gaming and Sonos system all running.

  • Not telstra. Lol was getting 90-98 then bam 20-46 i asked and they said To many new connections in your area will be fixed in a week. But because i complained after 2 weeks ill get some credit…

Not what i pay for, some credit rolls eyes your charging premium price with buzz tactics

Buy the router everyone here recommends - the Asus RT-AC68U. I own it and have FTTP, never had any issues. Good speeds. I went hunting and found some good prices for you:

    • Go for this one ive had mine for my FTTP 100/40 for a few years now and have not once had to reset it or had any issues gaming streaming or my plex server.

    • Nice one mate. I paid $167 for this from the same store just the other week.

  • Asus RT-AC88U would the best router I've ever owned I don't think you'd be disappointed with the price over performance with the Asus RT-AC68U. You can also use it for a VPN client and use PIA Torgaurd ect settings so some IP's or all IP's are protected.
You wont be able to so that with TP link from what I read.

  • keep in mind that a lot of providers (definitely optus and maybe telstra also) who provide their own cheap router with your service MAC lock the service to the router (when initial connection is made the MAC address [hw serial]) is checked and only works if its the one that's expected.
However, most good routers have a feature which allows you to change their MAC, so you can match it to the MAC of the router you're replacing.
This is what i've done with my Optus 100/40 NBN-HFC connection.

I'm using a Netgear D7000 which is pretty excellent, btw. THats a somewhat old version, new one is called R7000, and can be had for under $200.

R7000 is not the new version it is just a router compare to modem and router dor D7000

  • Make sure you line is delivering the required output

    • please explain?

      • With FTTP, the NTD port WILL deliver a 1000Gb connection, on all 4 ports if that is what you order. There is none of this 'up to'

The NDD is supplied with ~2400/1200 with the current tech, but the fiber is able to deliver 100x the speed with upgrading the NTD and FAN.

NBN and your RSP can both see if the NTD is functioning, and you do not need to allow access to your private network for this, unlike FTTN with its insecure management.

        • so basically I don't need to check my line output because it is FTTP?

    • This is FTTP, not FTTN…
You either have a functioning connection capable of gigabit speeds, or a non functioning connection.

It's not like my FttN with maximum attainable of 32/8 and dropping every month…
      12 months ago I had 35/10 and 18 months ago 49/20.
I figure in about 5 years time I'll be back to the same down rate as I had from the Tophat ADSL connection I had pre-NBN. That's progress for you!

NBN don't care (NBN Tech that came to line check our house: "everything is fine, call us again if you experience further issues") as long as I'm syncing above 12/1 with no more than 5 dropouts a day.
So glad we as a country decided that saving 20% to get a tenth of the capacity (at best) was a worthwhile investment in our collective future!

  • If you don’t mind tinkering get the EdgeRouter Lite 3.
