Whilst you don't necessarily need to, if you do buy this I would personally advise you to do yourself a favour and install Merlin's firmware instead of stock.

It is based on Acers stock but with bells and whistles added.

    • Does it support AiMesh?

      • +1

Last time I checked, no it doesn't.

        AIMesh isn't open source.

great price for an awesome router!

i bought an archer c7 initially but the piece of sh!t crashed every day. i wasted so much time troubleshooting and i finally returned it and got this instead. Couldn't be happier with it!

    • My Archer C7v2 was good until I decided to use VPN. Because the processor is not amazing, the speed is not great when Openvpn is set. I am still using it, but I am looking for a better CPU now.

      • Well mine has been problematic since day 1. I do have static ip but not sure if that’s the cause.

  • Whats so good about this router?

    • +1

Mine is just a solid performer with a pretty strong signal. It has not crashed. The dashboard is very straight forward so you can easily do static ip for all the gear attached and see what is on your network, block MACs, apply time limits……

There are newer models but I don't need their additional features and while their wireless might be faster it's a bit academic once you go way over your internet speed (unless you are moving large files around your wireless network)

  • Software looked great on the Asus but i had 3 returns for hardware issues, I asked for a refund.

  • Just be aware that cheap imports of this model aren't supported by Asus Oz. This means ai mesh is likely not available and definitely not in a mixed Oz /import environment.

    • Mine came from a well known Aus supplier unforantely.

  • Thanks OP bought a second unit for my home, AiMesh come at me.

  • I have a Telstra (Netgear) Gateway Pro which I have never installed. Have the issues been worked out on these or am I just better off getting one of the Asus units? I use Voip.

  • I know this is a good router but is a few years old now. Still worth it for FTTP?

    • for its price point it kills any competition, but I suspect this offer is a grey import, which means overseas firmware and no support from Asus.

I have a Australian retail RT-AC68U, and it has been rock solid, MONTHS of Uptime.

[edit] I stand corrected, these are rebranded / Refurbished / Jailbroken TM-AC1900 from Tmobile. 5Ghz is Restricted to US frequencies / power, and NO official support.

Asus Australia have banned them from official firmware updates.

      • Hm, I'm unsure if Futu have been selling the rebranded ones, here's the listing: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-RT-AC68U-AC1900-1900Mbps-Du…

I did see some of the T-Mobile and OEM ones floating around on eBay though and steered well clear of them.

I've purchased from Futu before and they're always been legit. I do also have a retail unit from JW computers that I'm adding to this with AiMesh, I can do a side by side comparison if you're interested when I receive the one from Futu.

(Even though they're sold out, it might be handy to know still)

        • hm… i want to purchase one but now am worried about it being a grey import on ones from wireless1 and shopping express and such ebay stores.

The only local retail place i have found cheapest is Bing Lee at $225 and i guess i can feel comfortable that it is not an import item?

If anyone can find it anywhere cheaper and know it isn't a grey import/oversea router please let me know.

        • @danz1989: Yea, that might be a bit tricky without knowing for sure. The shopping express one appears to be a legit AC68U for $156AUD.

JW, PCCG and MWave all list for $225. There is another store on Static Ice that sells them for $198 not including shipping, but I'm not familiar with their store.

I filtered out all of the OEM and T-Mobile ones and that one still seems to be the best bet, although the PROXY coupon expires today.

      • I received mine today. It's a legit retail RT-AC68U.

My store bought one from JW computers is on the left and the Futu one is on the right: https://i.imgur.com/M4E3pjR.png
Here's some more info on the spine (left=JW, right=Futu): https://i.imgur.com/tVPuOuP.png

Obviously, it's upgradable to the latest official Asus firmware. Currently using in a AiMesh setup with the existing RT-AC68U.

        Good deal overall.
