Monitor Spec Limit for Onboard Graphics

Howdy,

I am currently only using onboard graphics card to display one 22" monitor but I am thinking of expanding it to having 2 monitors.

Whilst browsing OzBargain for new monitors, I realised that my onboard graphics may not be powerful enough to display 2 of modern technology monitors.

Does anyone know what my onboard gfx limit is? (Intel HD Graphics 4600)

I was eyeing the following:

Can it support 2 of these monitors?

It is mainly for office usage and minimal gaming (Minecraft for my niece).

  • I have an old laptop with Intel HD 4400 that I use daily with a second monitor for office use and never have any issues.

Just make sure you have enough ports (HDMI/VGA) and you should be fine.

  • Its fine, pick either monitors.

  • see how many output at the back of your motherboard has

  • It seems to have 3 inputs.
    HDMI, DVI and VGA

Does that mean, in theory, I can run 3 monitors?

    • Yes although VGA bandwidth is fairly low. Not sure if it can do 2560x1440.

      • I'm thinking of having my 22" connected to VGA at the moment, if I can find the purpose for it!

  • It'll display the desktop and a few windows fine.

Both monitors you link are 1440p… you'll need a dedicated GPU if you want to run Minecraft at full resolution and reasonable quality. I don't think your DVI or VGA connectors have the bandwidth to support 1440p either, you'll have to use HDMI.

Finally, an iGPU uses system memory. If you don't have enough, it can hobble your system if you're doing something memory intensive.

    • Ahh, it looks like I can only have one of these monitor then since it can only have one HDMI connection. Bummer

      • dvi-dl no problem on 1440p

  • +1

If you have an extra port to plug in another monitor it will run fine. Its the games/programs you run that stress out your graphics card not display output. The resolution of the display will be dependent on your card tho.

    • ^This

    • I'm not sure how it will behave with Minecraft. I guess I'll have to try it out and see. I'm hoping it will still be ok with lower resolution

      • Beginning to suspect this is a troll post…
