what's the advantage of these over say the TP-Link ones? (or the Xiaomi Yeelights too)

      The software is less bad.

Supports Apple Homekit and thus Siri if you have iOS devices. Personally I like the idea of a hub, keeps devices off the WiFi network and down the line as protocols change etc I can just replace the hub if need be and not all the lights. Hue also has a bunch of rather useful accessories, in particular if you live with multiple people I feel the dimmer switches are almost a must to act as on/off physical switch without powering off the bulb entirely which in turn prevents you accessing it with a phone. We have smart bulbs through most of our home and rarely use an app to control them.

At those prices the TP Link arent much less and additional Hue bulbs start at $28 at Amazon and sometimes go for less, so scaling out will be the same or cheaper.

  • I purchased this instead of the Ambience one, Do'h!!! Realised too late. Can't change it. Ah well.
