Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil 100% Italian 1 Litre $5 at Coles Greenhills East Maitland NSW

101

Normally about $16, it appears Coles are discontinuing this size. My bottle is BBE Nov 2012, the one I left behind was BBE Jun 2011.

  • wow..almost a year and a half difference in BBE date, no wonder they are discontinuing it.. haha

    • Let's hope the other branches have some 2012 bottles at this price. These were on a separate clearance rack, not a regular shelf.

colavita is at the bottom of choice's extra virgin olive oil survey. expensive and doesn't taste good according to choice. i suggest giving the brand a miss.

you can't neg based on choice.com.au

i think that is a reasonable neg. the product is not very good according to choice. according to choice the product doesn't even meet the International Olive Council (IOC) trade standard for “extra virgin” olive oil. if the quality is off (short dated which suggests it might be), it is not a good deal at any price.

        • tough crowd !!

    • Not expensive now ;).

    • but this is $5 for 1 litre

the one in choice is $17.98 for 500 ml…

So value-wise this is a bargain… Although I noticed that Choice didn't review the BEST Olive Oil

The results of Choice judging look really weird to me. According to them the best oils are Coles, Wollworths, IGA brands. And they give very low score to some really good and tasty brands like Bertoli, Lupi, etc, incl. the above mentioned Colavita.
If you look at the list you will notice very "strange" pattern: the judging panel gave the higher score to Australian brands and the lower score to the oils from Spain, Italy and Greece.
I think the intention of so-called judging panel results conducted and published by Choice was quite clear- advertising of buying Australian.

    • The Choice report makes it quite clear that the key to great tasting olive oil is freshness. No surprise that the local brands score highly as they don't spend months in transport or questionable storage before getting to the shelves. Even my Italian partner agrees that the Coles product tastes a lot better than the Italian product.

    • Choice's blind-tests more reliable than brand-tests.

It could have something to do with the origin of the Olives or the oil is much fresher than stuff that has sat on a ship and in transport for months before it gets to you.

After reading the Choice survey I gave the Coles brand a go.
Found it noticeably better than the import brand I'd been using.

Suggesting Choice is biased is ludacris.

I've not tried ludacris. Is it Italian ?
