Housewarming Present Ideas

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has any good/creative ideas what I can buy my friend for his housewarming.

Budget is $400 and under

Personality:
- likes whiskey (I'm looking into a keg - but i cant find any good ones)
- has 2 dogs
- married

What he has already:

  • Xiaomi robot vacuum
  • Weber BBQ
  • Cutlery + Bedsheets

Thanks so much for the suggestion guys!

No! No pets as presents, especially as surprise presents. Just because it worked out once doesn't change anything.

      • Don't see why not if the person is asked, compatible with current pets and willing to look after one. There's lots of animals in shelters looking for love.

You didn't really mention that OP should ask. It's better if the person is asked, but I feel a pet is big enough of a commitment that it should be done proactively by the person who's going to be taking care of the pet.

    • hahaha i love the spontaneous idea.. but i would be worried for the welfare of the kitten if he/she doesnt get along with his two dogs. Thanks though!

Good knife block set. Wusthof or if they are those MasterChef types, Global.

    • Good present but OP should make sure they don't already have one first.

    • Hi there thanks of the suggestion, but they already have that :)

  • Is he single and living alone? Get him something that'll keep him alive like a small grill or sandwich press.

    • this. be a good friend, forego the simple pleasures and get something that'll engender good health. Maybe a powerful blender or an indoor plant? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4419447/

    • Hi there, he's married… he has all of that :) Thanks x

      • That's important - presumably they're also sharing the home, so (imho anyway) the housewarming gift should be to the both of them, and not just him. (Which sadly rules out the keg of whisky out, as cool as that would've been).

  • If he likes whisky, you can buy him a Royal Doulton decanter set. There's currently 30% off if you spend $100 or more, or you might try the outlet store

    • This.
And a bottle of something to go in it.

Otherwise the suggestion of a Bunnings voucher is a good one.

If he’s just bought the house, he might want to grab some basic diy stuff.

Power drill, screw driver set, spanner set etc.

    • We have already given him that :)
      Thanks

  • I usually don't go for gift vouchers but if he purchased the house, rather than renting it, I would be looking at a Bunnings voucher - there is always a thousand things to do around a new place - like replacing locks etc.

    • I love the idea, but i dont think he would feel comfortable with that amount on the gift voucher.

      • The problem with being generous :) Maybe a gift voucher and something else. So something practical and something indulgent.

  • If they appreciate the finer things I always love gifting a fancy cleaning set…makes cleaning more fun :)

But your budget is pretty big. Most handy exxy items are a quality chefs knife and bread knife, le creuset pot, (you could combine with print outs of some suggested recipes), quality towels - especially more fancy guest towels (could combine with fancy soap like loccitane or Aesop)….

    • Thanks so much. I bought them something on those lines for their last housewarming lol (nice handwash)..

    A lemon tree

  • Bunnings has some pretty nice established plants in teh garden section. I grabbed a big orchid for like $25, which is way better than some stupid bouquet. Yes this was for a woman but still, it's not a bad little thing for the wife?

    • Thanks - yeh i was planning to give the wife a plant or a teaset :)

Just need something for the husband. Thanks :)

  • I am kinda anti gifts as so many gifts end up being wasted. I would buy bunnings vouchers or similar.

  • A book on birds

  • google home and or other smart devices (lights, boombox etc)

Hell no…the only people I know with google homes were given them and really wish they didn't have them.

      • i totally agree, i dont see the use of a google home!

  • Pressure cooker plus some cookbooks

300 rolls of toilet paper. he's going to use it.

you can look him in the eye when you hand it over and say "think of me whilst you use this" <—- maintain prolonged eye contact to invoke maximum level of uncomfortability.

  • I'll invite you to my housewarming when I buy an actual house.

  • Dyson fan. Totally unnecessary but a hell of a gift.

    Plants

  • Can you come to my housewarming too?

  • Painting or artwork

  • A selection of indoor plants with lovely (dog resistant) pots/stands. Indoor gardens making a huge comeback, with the added bonus of being great for indoor air quality (this is esp important if the house is fairly new thus giving off loads of VOCs).

    Some eneloops…

  • Cordless drill set if they dont already have one.

  • A large heater
