Looking for Teaching Jobs in The UK

My girlfriend and I are looking to head over to the UK to work next year. I should be able to get a transfer to any large city through my work. My girlfriend recently graduated with her masters of teaching (Music and Art). I understand there are a lot of opportunities to teach in the UK, and there are heaps of agencies if you search online, does anyone know of the best way to apply for jobs?

Are agencies good, or are they leeches?

Would there be jobs in most major cities?

When is the right time to be looking for teaching jobs if we want to move in January?

My girlfriend has been teaching instrumental music in schools for 6 years, and classroom music for 6 months (not as a registered teacher) and has good references from the previous schools.

Edit - Masters was in Secondary Teaching, but experience is mostly in Primary. Looking for primary jobs, but would consider secondary.

  • When I was looking I was told to go through a company that let's you deal directly with the school so they don't take most of your pay

    • any recommendations?

  • find one when ur there,

  • She should start by confirming if she needs to do any tests or anything to confirm her qualifications in the UK.

Next step if I were her would be to get onto an emergency teacher register and establish contacts to look for a perm role.

There’s a couple of job search websites over there. You can google that I’m sure.

Are you going to be London based or outside eg Manchester or something ?

    • I can be flexible with where I go, but i need to let my company know soon. So I'm thinking one of the major cities, but maybe not london. I suppose my concern at the moment is that i don't want to get a position in a city where she'll struggle to find a job.

      • I don’t have any experience in this and google is your friend.

From what I’ve heard is that the UK is seriously cracking down on skilled work visas and will now only give them out for certain professions.

Your gf needs to be really proactive about finding contacts in the UK, Ideally maybe someone who has moved over there from Australia. Tell her to ask colleagues, colleagues of colleagues etc and find out if anyone has done this and what the rules are. There’s a Facebook group called “moving to London”. I suggest joining that and asking there.

She needs to contact the relevant governing body in the UK and find out if she needs to do any tests or show any paperwork etc etc. Update her LinkedIn, start looking for jobs even if it’s just a casual Skype chat with someone who has done the same thing.

She’ll probably have to start doing emergency teaching so getting on some sort of list would be a good first step.

The school year starts in late August and finishes early ish July of the next year, with a short break in January/over Christmas.

  • update your linkedIn with all keywords that recruiters will look for. thats one angle to add to the above.

what have you found so far in searching for teaching jobs in the UK on google? The school year likely starts at a different time to australia, so this will also affect the recruitment period. in saying that, supply teaching is still a worthwhile opportunity and from there she can land something regular.

Also look for music schools and tutors, anything thats big enough and has multiple music teachers. email them to make contact and ask them questions about work requirements and if they have hired tutors from overseas in the past.

  • Have you checked with UK immigration to ensure your G.F meets all their requirements to work in the UK? Does she qualify to work permanently or needs a short term working Visa ?

One allows you to work for years other means leave country every xx yrs obtain new visa etc.

When looking for a suitable living/working area, look into things like crime rate, problems with refugees flooding the area as UK is getting overrun with refugees and non English speaking people.

    • +1

all good for visas, we'll get the young person visas.
