Which bank treats you best when a fraudulent transaction arises?

A friend recenty had his CC account plundered by some Bitcoin scam. His was an NZ bank issued card. He was staying with me in Australia at the time. The conversation with his bank was quite bizarre and he got generally bad treatment. My thought at the time was that my good experience with CBA was a complete contrast. I have since heard that ANZ are not the best with claims.
With Commonwealth in my case, they immediately refunded the disputed money and dealt with the claim thereafter. This was not my NZ friend's experience. What are your experiences?

  • My Westpac card has been done over a few times (details taken from hotel computer systems). Westpac have been pretty good - most of the time they spot it before me. Never had to pay anything that was fraudulent.

    • Also with Westpac; I spotted it first and instead of closing and reissuing, they decided to dispute the charge and meanwhile I got hit with more fraudulent charges. But once I told them about these ones, they then closed and reissued the card and I didn't have to pay the charges

  • CBA Has always done well for me, even spotted fraudulent transaction before I've noticed.

Ditto. It's almost 'no questions asked'.

For fraud, 28 Degrees hands down.

One a trip to Vietnam a couple of years ago I have both my 28 Degrees and CBA CCs conmpromised (both used in South Africa). I only used my 28 Degrees card to book the hotel rooms and then accidentally left it at home (so I'm looking at you Agoda as I also used by CBA CC to do the same).

Anyhow, 28 Degrees were really responsive. They called me up and asked me if I booked flights in South Africa, movie tickets or a safari. I said no. They cancelled it so fast I had SA Airlines call me up asking to pay another way as the CC was declined (not a scammer btw as I hung up and called them back on their website's phone number and got the same lady).

CBA on the other hand was also hit the next day. I identified it quickly and contacted CBA. They told me I had to wait for the payment to clear (3 working days) before I could do anything about it. They wouldn't even cancel my CC. I wondered how much more damage these bozos could do in 3 days with my CC (luckily it didn't have a very big limit).

After 3 days, I had to call them back and get the process working. It was really crap and so nonchalant. The business on the other end of the transaction would have lost out because of the wait too.

    • Agreed. My 28 Degrees got skimmed in Malaysia.
I got locked out - then when I got home found out it had been used in the UK while I was still in KL.
28 Degrees was very good at reversing the dodgy charges.

  • ANZ has a Falcon and that is one high maintenance bird. lol

  • Virgin Flyer card managed by Citibank.
    **cking useless.
Refused to even allow the transactions to be reported until they cleared over the following days.
Failed on multiple occasions to record all of the fraudulent transactions reported.
Failed to take any action whatsoever to reverse transactions while investigation occurred.
Only took action after FSO complaint and even then took 2 months to resolve.
    Never ever get this card
