Suggestions on Receiving Calls Overseas When Using Kogan Mobile

Hey guys, heading overseas at the end of this year for about 3 weeks.
Given the length of time away, and that a few important calls are expected around that time (will be getting married ~5 days after arrival back in Oz), I'm a bit worried about Kogan Mobile not having international roaming activated. I used to be with OVO Mobile and it was perfect being able to switch on roaming and receiving SMS etc (especially for Bank OTPs etc).

I was thinking of getting another SIM card and setting my Kogan Mobile SIM to forward all calls to the other SIM card (of course the other SIM card must have roaming as an option), so that all calls to my main number get diverted and I can still receive them while overseas. I know that SMS won't be forwarded (or is there a way to have this done)?

Thanks for any suggestions :)

Cheers

I think cheapest will be Voda Sim.

Never tried but I'm sure there is an app for that. Of course you will need to plug in the phone always in charging and connected to wifi so the app will work.

    • Thanks.

So I get a prepaid Voda SIM, and activate the $5/day roaming feature?

I have a Dual SIM Moto G4 Plus so will have the Kogan SIM in one slot (which won't have any signal while overseas anyway) and the other SIM in the other slot, hopefully this is a suitable arrangement?

You cant do $5 roaming on prepaid.
You will need to go on a postpaid plan.
You of course can get a month to month one and cancel when you get back.

        • Thanks for the info, very helpful :)

  • I know a few years back amaysim offered free sms delivery on prepaid plans while overseas. You can check with them if its still available.

I believe you never pay for receiving SMS while on international roaming? Someone correct me if I am wrong?

      • You're right, you don't pay for receiving SMS. However, I think bigticket is referring to sending them.

  • Are you on a month-to-month plan with Kogan? If so, best is to port out to another Telco (I find Amaysim great and they do have International roaming - while overseas, you can go with their Pay As You Go plan - which costs $10 for 1 year expiry credits). And then get a local SIM while overseas.

With getting a new SIM only for International roaming, you will need to update your contact details for all the bank accounts you need access to while overseas (changing from your old mobile number to the new one), and on your return to Australia you will need to change it back - which I find too much hassles :)

    • No, I'm on one of their 365-day plans which is why I'm in such a rut now!
If I was with a month-to-month plan I'd definitely have ported out then back in :)

  • I have this (free forward :sms forwarding by Johannes finker) installed on both phone, so you can leave a phone withkogan sim at home, and you bring other phone overseas.

It will work as long you have internet while overseas.

    • Nice, thanks. I'll check it out.

  • Do you have a VoIP service?
You can take that with you and leave a voicemail on you mobile saying to reach you that way

    • I don't have a VoIP service, but if it's the best way to do this then I'll set one up :)

Ask them to contact you through WhatsApp?

        • That's actually a brilliant suggestion. Silly me!

  • Hi
Have you considered getting a sim sticker
I don't know if you could forward calls from your number to it but this might be an option
    https://www.knowroaming.com/order/stickers-and-sims/8-knowro…

    • I checked it out, quite an expensive option! And it comes with a US number which might be a problem (I'll be in India not US)!

  • Best way is to leave the phone with mightytext installed. You can view and send sms's (and get a log of missed calls) through any web browser (login via PC or on another device)

    • Sounds good :)
