Outlook 2010 to Outlook 2010 pst file Export/Import issue?

Hi all,

Have a Windows 7 pc that has Outlook 2010.
Exported the 4.1 GB pst created file to desktop of new Windows 10 Pc with Outlook 2010 on it.
Attempting to inport and seeming to take for ever to install….. Message of "not responding" appears and disappears?

Is this normal?
Pc is Dell 9370.

Coping the Outlook data file from windows 7 pc location and trying to import did not work either?

Anyone know why not working?

  • It's outlook, that's why. And I've been shifting Outlook profiles for decades. With thunderbird you simply export the profile to a single file using Mozbakup then import it on the new computer works EVERY TIME.

As for Outlook somtimes it works most times it doesn't, you can try a third party tool such as Backrex or similar…and prayer..I find that works the best with Outlook.Good luck, hopefully someone here will give you a better answer.

Can't you just create the same email account on the new PC, close Outlook and copy/overwrite the newly created .PST with the one from the old PC?

    • I guess it would depend if it were an IMAP account or a POP account. Am IMAP account should work though I'm not sure it would pull the contacts over.

  • Put it in the correct place for outlook to see it?

I use 2013 and the pst must be in documents/outlook files I think earlier in 7 I think it was in users/profilename/Microsoft/Appdata/roaming etc or create a new pst with same name in outlook noting where the pst lives, close outlook remove and replace pst mind you a 4 gb pst is massive and will take time to import

  • Now I haven't used Outlook for over 5yrs, but it always had issues with PSTs over 2Gb. Personally I found anything over 1Gb were more prone to issues, so I liked to split them.

If you've got access to the old Outlook & mail file. I'd recommend you
    1) Make a copy of the exising PST file (in case things go wrong).
    2) create 4 new PST files (mailboxes) via Outlook
    3) drag folders into these new files (work out roughly how big each folder is & try to distribute them evenly over the 4 pst files)
    4) Do a Compact
    5) copy them across to the new system and open them one by one. If you've partitioned your HDD, pop them onto the non C: drive
