Bang for buck plans on telstra

Hey OZBs!

I've been with 3 for the past 3 years and am surely getting fed up with its unreliability now… Enticed by telstra's awesome network, but dont think i can afford their prices directly. I'm not locked to contract any more, so am willing to take up advice/suggestions on beautiful plans on the Next-G service provider. Direct plans, prepaid, post paid, MVNO options, bring it all up!

Cheers!

ps.: Looking to spend about 40 (max 50 bucks) a month, will need abt 500 mb of data!

edit: currently getting 350$ call credit + 750 mb for 40 bucks. interested in telstra's 3G service only.

edit 2: is optus comparable in terms of service? that means way more options… any inputs here?

Telstra's awesome network ?? wow i never thought i would hear that!

    • Yeah … remember when the cowboys said it was "Anywhere. Anytime" … and I couldn't get it at home just 3k from the Melbourne CBD.

      • lol is this right?

damn ive been a bait to advertising :( also coz ppl at work keep raving about how it has a blanket coverage…

… but to be fair coverage is better now (From memory they might claim 97% of the population.)

I've been a Telstra customer 25 years (mobiles about 20 years) … and they got increasingly money-grabbing up until the wake of Sol Trujillo's departure (he left in 2009). Around that time Charles Wright in The Age's Green Guide rightly likened Telstra to a hoover which tried to hoover up any spare cash you had with its billing practices.

Since the Government brought some pressure on them a year or so ago there have been signs of improvements (probably partially responsible for their reduced profits reported last week).

Optus also has just upped to 97% so this means they are on par depending which 97% you are in ;)

          From the telstra website,

"The Telstra Next G network is over twice as large as any other 3G network in Australia. It also covers 99% of the population. "

        • … although that same website said "Anytime.Anywhere." not long ago ;)

your not going to get concensus anywhere about who the best mobile provider either is, or would be for you, there are always location specific issues or provider issues, personally, im in the same boat as op, but i have probably like 14 months of a contract left, and are most likely going to try and find a telstra deal to my liking, although I will say, my service is starting to get back to normal with 3, had a six week run where it was shocking, but all seems okay touch wood

Are you looking to upgrade your phone as well?
If not, unless your 3 Phone is a "MegaG" compatible model, you wont see any benefit from Telstra's "Awesome" network, in fact you may well see a decrease!

If it is a MegaG model, and you move to Telstra, you'll see improved reception in areas not serviced by Optus/Vodafone (3's MegaG coverage, which piggyback's Telstra's NextG network has limited access only where there is competition from another provider).

If you don't have a MegaG phone, either stick with 3 (as you'll have the same coverage as Vodafone), or move to Optus/Virgin.
    .
    .
    .
If you are looking for a new phone, you won't get one on Telstra for $40/month that I'm aware of… you'd have to go Pre-paid.

    .
Finally: Telstra's network is easily the best network for coverage and Data speed in Australia. Their land area coverage map is vastly larger than either Optus or Vodafone, even though the population coverage is only a few % bigger.
Put it this way… how many people live on the highways between towns? Answer: Very few.
Optus/Vodafone can have coverage in towns and minimal coverage on roads and percentage population-wise, they will be very close to Telstra who has coverage along the length of the road as well as in the towns.
(NOTE: the above is an example, I'm not saying that Optus/Vodafone don't have coverage along roads, it's just an example of how the land area covered by Telstra can be so much larger, yet by % population it is only marginally bigger)

  • hmm, $49, $400 calls, 1GB data, NextG…. what about this !!!!!!
