Want to Move to Harkaway (Suburb of Melbourne). Good or Bad? Any Good School There?

I m just looking for help and buying a new home in Harkaway.

Have started visiting area but I don't have a friend or family member living there. As in any area there are good pockets and bad as well, there are good streets and bad as well.

Can you please guide how it is to live in Harkaway?

We are small family have kids going to primary school.

Any issues in Harkaway? How are schools, public transport, internet, facilities and crimes?

Any streets or pockets to avoid please and why? My budget is around $1.5m.

Is it an area full of powerlines.

Sorry again if I have annoyed anyone and thanks for your help.

  • Is it an area full of powerlines

Adds to the serenity if it is.

What do you see when you look for powerlines?

    • powerlines are a reminder of man’s ability to generate electricity

    • As much as I deride people who think EMFs are doing them harm - high voltage power lines that can light up a CCFL bulb through the air freak me out. Having said that, I think I spent about 10hrs a day for about 6 years right under them and… well you judge if it had any negative effects haha.

    Harkaway

    … population of 849
… all roads outside the main town are unsealed
Harkaway Primary School has an enrolment of about 200 students
The area is not served by Melbourne public transport.
a community hall, tennis courts and numerous walking and equestrian trails

Sounds like it might not even have the power on.

    • 40km from Melbourne cbd.

      Also worth considering.

  • thanks, with the school
i am thinking of haileybury or st margaret?
    any good?

  • The town literally has away in it's name.

    I'd stay away.

I live a few suburbs away, Harkaway is a really nice area actually. You'll like it.

Hahaha I know you didn't mean it, but it's funny (to me, I have a weird sense of humour…) that your comment is basically "I don't live there, but I hear it's great! Go live there."

  • You need to travel a long way for the nearest supermarket.

  • I live in Cranbourne and have never even heard of Harkaway. Apparently it's only ~25 minutes away. I wonder why I haven't heard of it yet…

I'm from Melbourne and had never heard of it. Looks like it's near Berwick.

With your budget, you could easily find a place in St Kilda.

It's a tiny little hilly country hamlet outside of Berwick/Pakenham. I suspect the land will soon be subdivided and taken over by new estates. Last time I drove through there were cows and orchards, and lots of green paddocks but that was a few years ago now - it is solid suburbia through from Berwick to Pakenham along the main road so it will be eating its way back into the paddocks. The thing many people may recall about Harkaway is bushfires roaring through there when Victoria had a bad bushfire season about 10 years ago.

Haileybury and St Margarets - Haileybury is one of Melbourne's top private schools - am not sure what the Berwick campus is like but there is no reason it won't be as good as the parent school. St Margaret's has an excellent reputation and a proud history - no reason to fault it.
