Can I Use The Audio Technica ATH-M40x for Everyday Use?

Do the M40x give a good listening experience when streaming movies, listening to music, watching YouTube videos etc.. or should i get the M50x?

I am not into mixing or studio recording, just want the M40x for casual listening. I've done a lot of research and seen great reviews for M40x but still a bit hesitant on buying them cause they might too flat sounding…

What did you guys think?

Appreciate any opinions!

You need to try them for yourself - what is flat to someone is not necessarily flat to someone else. Having used AT headphones in the past for many years, I would say that you're probably justified in saying that the M40X will be a bit flat, but so too will the M50X. However, they are certainly not studio reference level flat, and you can definitely EQ them to a nicer listening experience.

    • ah yes completely forgot about EQ them, probs will go for the M40x then

Both headphones are neutral to a fault. Yes, M40X is fine for your needs.

    • cool thanks

Flat is good. It's lack of power you should be concerned about. M50X is meant to be self driving, but I find with a headphone amp it sounds a lot better. Also I swapped the foam pads for a much thicker pair from Amazon, it makes a huge difference. Also if the band is too tight, stretch it out almost flat (it's metal) for a second and then lat it spring back, it'll fit a little looser. M50X is very big and unfashionable, I wouldn't wear it in public. Doesn't even have an inline mic anyway, and it's not wireless. For a walking headphone the M50X is a loser.

    • Yea i think i will go with the M40x, it's more affordable as well. Thanks

  • neither, get the Bose QC35.

I own a pair of the 40's as well

Had them just under couple of years now

I think they sound great but then again I have only had cheap headphones before that

You do know that Bose stands for right?

      Buy Other Sound Equipment

Bose is a surname of its founder, so yes I do know what it stands for :D

      • Hahahah Bose has a weird reputation. It's overrated by people completely unfamiliar with sound equipment, honestly a little underrated by people who're basically audiophiles, but both would be correct when looking at different product lines.

  • Update: these headphones are goddamn beautiful. Even without the EQ, the bass is present and is just the right amount so it doesn't drown out the music. These are super crisp sounding headphones, i can hear things i couldn't before on songs and with the EQ, the sound is even better. Best bang for your buck.

The only issue with M40X is the earpads are little irritating compared to the super comfy M50X. Otherwise they are more or less same in terms of sound quality.

    • Yea, they do get uncomfortable after like 2 hours which can be resolved by purchasing some quality earpads if you are willing to make the experience better.
