  • Add a Chromecast Audio for a pretty decent 'smart' speaker?

    • Indeed! Actually any traditional speakers can become a "smart" speaker as long as it has 3.5mm stereo line in to connect to the Chromecast Audio.

The problem with AV Receiver is you have to turn on power switch input channel, that is not smart enough XDD

Running Bluetooth v2.1, most phones streaming to it will have to fall-back and will begin running out of power pretty promptly. Might be better to plan on using the AUX jack instead.

BT 3.0 is pretty much the minimum these days, but v4.0 or greater is far better at reducing power consumption- not to mention security.

I haven't seen a BT 2.1 device for years. These must have been on the shelf for a long time

      • How's that Chromecast audio go when you say "hey Google," hardly a smart speaker….

Any decent deals for Chromecast audio?

  • Looks like a great price but I couldn't find a review.

    • Buy first. Think later.

Nakamichi used to be the ducks guts back in the day, how are they holding up these days?

    • Unsure about the bluetooth speakers but I purchased a 1DIN motorised 7" Nakamichi head unit a few years ago and it was one of the worst pieces of technology I had ever owned.
Cut out constantly, wouldn't save settings (partially), interface looked straight out of the 90s, disk would constantly get jammed. RMAd 4 times until I threw it out and bought a decent brand

    • …yeh i hear the brand aint what it used to be.

There is a revival of the brand after it went bankrupt in 2002. For $56 with delivery, I think the Delta 50 is pretty decent price for a 50W 4 speaker system (2 woofers and 2 tweeters).

Nakamichi is making a come back with the Shockwafe Ultra 9.2Ch DTS:X 1000W 45-Inch Sound Bar System. Looks like a really good affordable system but it's not sold in AU.

Nakamichi is now part of a Chinese conglomerate called Grande Holdings

      • Sounds a bit like Atari, it just ended up as a brand name with the original company being long gone.

        • Atari are still around?

        • @congngo: Infogrames bought the rights to the name in 2001 and rebranded themselves Atari in 2009.

    • +1

Nakamichi became a victim of "brand engineering"…

Like many name brands that fell upon hard times, the company was dissolved in 1998 and the assets sold off. One of the major assets of this formerly well regarded company is the name and trademark due to their product quality build, reliability & R&D/innovation. Nakamichi, like many quality brands, are often sold off and put on cheap equipment looking for instant "respectability". Usually no effort is made in reproducing the original quality product, nor any effort made with research & developments (R&D) for new and innovative product.

Basically, it is just a label these days to stick on a crappy 'Yum-cha' product. The Nakamichi founders would commit ritual hari-kari if they were around today to witness what happened to their brand.

No 'bragging rights' are attached to these products anymore.

  • Pretty sure it's half price if anyone's wondering. Staticice on a similar item is twice as expensive, but link goes to JB HI FI and it's half price.

    • The 50 was significantly more

    • Thanks for that - grabbed a white one :)

  • Bought the black one. Wonder if it's worth getting two to use it as PC stereo speakers?

I laugh how these were priced at $349 never sold when I worked at JB. From memory Soniq bought them out from another Chinese company so nothing fantastic at this price I would say its fairly priced !

Nakamichi used to be the best cassette player money could buy. Expensive too.

No wonder they went out of business.

  • Thanks op. Bought the 50. Go nicely in the cube storage unit under tv.

  • Purchased all 3, will gift one atleast. Always liked the sound of the 50.

    • Hows the sound signature on it? Warm or bright?

      • Honestly been a good 2 years I reckon since I heard it. From memory it wasn't bright, I'd probably remember that more. The bigger was much better though.

  • Thanks beetlebum.
    Bought the Delta 50.

  • Bought one don't know good or bad

  • Did JB ever sell the 100? It will annoy me if that goes on sale tomorrow because that's the one I really want.

  • Snoozer r loozerz, couldn't pull the trigger , now the 50 page cant be found…… Saved myself $55
Edit….. Dam they still have it in white

  • I bought this one on the last deal and very happy with it ($94 is a great price IMHO) - enough for a small area, mine is in our dining room

  • Thx ops.. got 2x, 1 Black and 1 White.. on 2 different account

  • I got a spare white delta 50 if anyone wants at cost price.

    • Hey Krisspy, how do they sound? I just got a delivery notification that the Toll driver is on the way.

        Flat, lifeless, thumpy.

        • +1

Just tested mine out and while they aren't superb I'd say they are GREAT value for a BT speaker under $200, let alone $46. I've got one connected via BT to my iMac and putting some graphic equalizer in makes a big difference. I've put another in the living area connected via BT to a Google Home as an external speaker and it is working very well! Only issue I've had so far is the BT connection skipping/dropping in and out but after unpairing and repairing they seem to be a bit better.

  • Anyone else got theirs, care to comment on the sound quality? Also, anyone else trying to use theirs as an external bluetooth speaker for a Google Home device?

    • I bought the 50w one (it was too cheap not to) it is exactly as @krisspy described - lifeless. Not bright, and despite the power the bass wasn't anywhere near as good as my Bose SoundLink mini 2. I don't think it's a bad purchase for the price, but I would be upset if I paid more than $80 for it.

  • I've used mine for the last week and sound quality is great in my opinion with a caveat that you have it plugged in via AUX. As previously stated, as the Bluetooth Standard is 2.1, assume that the streaming rate isn't as good as the newer bluetooth speakers and the sound is very shrill and digital.

Don't think you can find anything that sounds this good/or as loud for $46. It's no Nakamichi Audiophile stuff, but as a general speaker it is great and is much better than my Sony XB-40's.

    • Thanks for that tip mate, just connected using the AUX from my iMac and there is a clear difference. Very happy with it, although I do know there is a lot better out there (for a price). I must admit, the design and build quality seems top shelf. And the magnetic front cover - sweet.

  • Anyone know of a trick to keep the speaker from turning off automatically? Seems as though it turns off on its own when it hasn't had an input for a set amount of time.

  • How is the delta 30 compare to 50?
