First deal so hopefully getting this right guys!

Great eBook Reader and great Price for thie 3G model. I have the non 3G same device and absolute amazing reading books on it looks like real paper basically.

From the Amazon description:

High-resolution 300 ppi display - reads like real paper.
Bookerly, our exclusive font, designed to read easily and comfortably at all sizes.
Built-in adjustable light - read day and night.
Unlike tablets, no screen glare, even in bright sunlight.
A single battery charge lasts weeks, not hours.
Lighter than a paperback, holds thousands of books.
More than 70,000 titles in the public domain, such as Pride and Prejudice and Treasure Island, are available for free.
Massive selection, low prices - over 5 million books. Over 1 million titles are 2.99 or less, over 3 million are 9.99 or less.

Wi-Fi + free 3G
A model with Wi-Fi + free 3G is the easiest option because there is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase and read right out of the box. Built-in free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that mobile phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. Your Kindle may use wireless connectivity to make other services available, such as wireless delivery of personal documents, which may require an additional charge. For more information, see Amazon Device Terms of Use

With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, 3G lets you download books anytime, anywhere, whether you're relaxing on a beach, halfway through a hike or waiting on the tarmac. Check 3G coverage area

  • Hmmm. I was looking for a deal on the regular kindle for the wife, but maybe I can stretch to this.

    • +1

When they were all on sale for Prime Day I looked over and over both versions and the paperwhite is definitely the better choice imo.

    • i dont know how useful 3G is. i suppose if you buy books from the kobo store its somewhat worthwhile but id just get the cheaper device.

      • I assume you meant to say Amazon (not Kobo store).

  • Plus I am seeing this at $179 on the website OP.

    • +1

      $179 is wifi only.

      • +14

Yeah, just came back to admit that i'm stupid. Sorry all.

      • Is that a good price too?

        • +3

$179 wifi only is RRP, so no.

  • Great price - thanks OP!

  • This looks great, however some books I'll have to get from other sources….

Can you manually add books to these? Like epub files etc?

    • +3

You can but you'll have to convert some to a compatible format - Kindle doesn't support EPUB, so usually you'll convert them to MOBI and load them on through USB.

      • Do converters work without issues? No weird layout or other issues?

        • +9

Calibre is amazing and won't change a thing. Even if they're copy protected it doesn't matter because you can remove the copy protection.

        • +5

Can confirm, Calibre is the best, have had no issues over the last 4 years of using it.

  • So this is the 3d generation Paperwhite from 2015, is it? Or there's another generation released after the 3d one? According to Wiki, Amazon made a white version of the 3d generation in 2016, and it's just the older 2015 generation with a white cover. I have the 2d generation with the 212 ppi and 4G storage (model DP75SDI) from 2014, so I am not sure if upgrading to this is worth it.

    • +2

If you have excellent eyesight I'm pretty sure you'll find a huge difference between 212 ppi and 300 ppi. I found a review showing the visual difference between them: https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-paperwhite-2015/

I've got the 2nd Gen Paperwhite, and compared it with a friends 3rd Gen PW, with the same book, same font, same size/weight etc, the difference was slight. It's more noticeable in the OS and menu than in actual book text. Perhaps if you were using it to view PDFs there might be a greater difference, 2nd gen and 3rd gen PWs are very very similar, and I decided not really worth the upgrade.

Also, I found the 2nd gen PW slightly quicker for page turns, and menu navigation, which I guess makes sense as there are less pixels to process.

Amazon are about due to update the 3rd gen to a new model with a variable colour temp front light, so perhaps this is them starting to clear old model stock?

      • +2

Very good points. That's what I thought too. I better wait for the next gen rather getting this three-year old generation now. And I only use mine for Mobi/AZW books and not PDFs, so I will keep this one for now and if a new one is released in the near future then buy that one, preferably when it's on sale or after a year. :)

Also don't forget tightare's great find with the 95 $0 ebooks for Kindle:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/395590

    • gutenberg is a much better option. however kindle uses DRM on all their books so you cant simply add any epubs onto the ereader like you can do with a kobo. but you can use calibre so the problem is remedied so what

    • Also try standardebooks - they have Amazon compatible versions of everything.

  • +7

Just a reminder, too, that Cash Rewards and Shopback are paying out 6% for Amazon, so that $199 becomes $187.06

  • I got a wifi on prime day for 129 I don't think 3g is worth it as wifi is everywhere and only required for downloading new books , I don't know how good the web browser is(previous Sony ebook was not that great at web browsing)

    • 3G is also used for syncing books between devices, and for any words not covered in the dictionary it'll download a wikipedia article instead. If you take it traveling it also saves typing in wifi details at every new place. Of limited use for some, but a handy feature for others.

Also, the next prime day is 11 months away.

  • Bought one… (profanity) got me

    • You definitely won't regret it…well, for a few weeks at least until the PW4 gets announced! 😂

  • Is there a big benefit of paperwhite over the $100 normal kindle?

    • Yes, the display is front-lit for reading in the dark, and the resolution is a lot higher.
