  • But if the seat was empty next to you, then you could've commandeered it for free…

This is an offer for guaranteed free seats.

But a flawless method to a free seat is always flatulence and high pitch and piercing crying (baby optional).

      • I can't find the prices for those other methods on their website.

  • +1

There's a few websites around (eg expert flyer) which let you view seating charts for free.

Yeah - it'll change a little closer to take off, but you can identify an empty area of the aircraft for free lots of the time.

    • I have tried this every damn time and never once has it worked. Plenty of people don't book a specific seat.

First example mentions the Pacific Islands…I think I know what the motivation is behind this "upgrade"…

    • I love OzBargain. Make any racial remarks against the Asian's and 2/3 of OzBargain will neg you, yet you get 10 votes for your poke at Pacific Islanders

  • If travelling on your own in a row of 3, the person at the other end won't know that you paid for the middle seat. Trying to protect the space that you paid for might get a little awkward.

    • +2

Cunning. Two 'strangers' in a row of 3 may both be paying for the empty seat :-)

      • They also overbook the flight knowing that fights are going to break out over this and they'll be able to kick them off the flight.

I once sat between the pilot and copilot on a flight from Melbourne to Burnie, TAS, because they overbooked by one. Was fantastic - got to hear about the engine that had an oil leak, and the faulty radar screen.

          That was on REX, though.

        • @dm01:
I remember when they used to let kids go up in the cockpit. They kept the talk about problems with the plane to a minimum while we were there though.

        • @Miss B: In 1987 my family and I flew to the UK, and on the way we three kids got to go visit the cockpit and it was a Big Deal although from memory I wasn't particularly fussed about the whole thing! Good times!

        • @dm01:
I thought this was going to be a joke about joysticks.

          @chrism238: Or about skiing.

  • Looks like its not available for flights from Australia to international destinations besides NZ :(

    • pity as that would be really great. Better than business imo.

    • Rarotonga? Norfolk Island? As per the description?

  • Air NZ is the only only carrier I know that stops you from leaving a seat empty between 2 people booking together.

We often book seats leaving a seat between us with other airlines.

This normally gives us a seat between for free. The rare couple of times when the flight is full, people have been happy to swap for the window or aisle rather than sit between us.

  • Would you get extra status points if pay the second seat?
