      Rates are already low

    Qantas cash AUD > USD
    $1 > $0.70

Fee free debit card AUD > USD
    $1 > $0.743

Fee free debit card + 3% fee AUD > USD
    $1 > $0.721

There's basically a ~5%+ fee built into Qantas exchange rates… Total cost is $250+ if you use it in the currency exchanged to. Lounge entry $59 at most.

    TL;DR:
Minimum cost is around $250 due to crappy exchange rates. Closer to $500+ if you plan on exchanging it back to AUD.

    • May I ask, which Fee Free Debit card are you using for comparison, Thanks.

ING Orange Everyday gives VISA wholesale rates

      • MasterCard rates as of recent purchase. Can't find them online but it's usually just below Google.

Visa rates aren't as good, see here. Currently 0.7381.

Edit: found the MasterCard converter, rate is currently meant to be closer to $0.7383. Basically Visa is exactly 5% over Qantas and MasterCard is slightly more than 5%.

Edit: Decided to to the math properly, seems it's a 4% fee over MasterCard/Visa rates. Basically it's $200 for 2 lounge passes, possibly closer to $1,000 if you try to convert back to AUD.

  • Are there any good fee free debit cards?

For anyone that does the maths

    These cards are extremely expensive

unless you like wasting money, in which case you don't belong on this site, why would you ever do this?!!!
just pay for lounge entry, and change your money elsewhere with better rates

Some don't quite understand the fee is added into the exchange rate - it's not actually *fee free**, just a rookie mistake.

  • as pointed out by others, this will end up been much more expensive than two lounge invitations!

    • What are two lounge invitations worth? $5000 deposit seems a lot of money.

      • $35-50 on forums depending how many you're buying, etc. Two is usually $70-80 for both.

$5,000 deposit isn't the issue, the exchange rate is. The $5,000 becomes around $3,550, which is just under $4,800 AUD worth. Realistically you'll get probably $4,500-4,600 for it if converting it back to AUD again…

        TL;DR:
You'll be paying $200-500+ in fees for two lounge passes worth <$80 total.

  • Qantas lounge passes sell on ebay for about $50 each.
    Cannot use in LAX😣

  • Seems like a bad offer
