How Not to Get Scammed When Buying a Gift Card

I wanted to grab some JB Gift Cards off Gumtree but didn't want to get duped into buying a dead card and etc. What are things to look out for?
EDIT: the idea was just to save $10 on some games. but saving $10 wasn't the risk of losing $40 so just ended up buying it straight up

I wouldn't do it. Too many risks.

  • +14

    don't

  • +27

You can reduce some of the risk by meeting at Jbhifi and confirming they work then immediately using them.

    • +6

wouldnt that remove all of the risk, not just some.

      • +34

Not all the risk. They could assault you as you leave the store and take the goods you purchased.

        • +3

I like the way you think

        • -1

then bring bikies or viet gang, claim them as your family members

    • -2

May be able to check online.
Would pay to give JB a call and ask the same question

      • +3

Doesn't make a difference if you give the seller the opportunity to use the gift card as soon as you hang up the phone.

  • +10

By not buying a GC off Gumtree

Meet at jbhifi, say you want to test it, used it at counter then run away.

how to not get scammed when selling gift card

But but but… it’s $1000 worth of gift cards for only $250… only problem is they can only mail them to me because they are in the army, serving on an oil rig in the middle of WA, and can only communicate via email. Western Union is pretty safe to pay with, yeah??

Don’t buy gift cards off people you don’t know.

I paid my taxes this year with giftcards and saved thousands compared to paying them in cash. you have to watch out for scammers because you don't want the ato to receive phony gift cards and delay your tax return.

      • +8

I think it’s great that the ATO now accepts iTunes cards as payment. I can get heaps of cheap iTunes cards off Gumtree. Can’t get cash that cheap!

      • +33

On that note, I was at a Coles the other day and overheard some staff members saying about someone trying to buy $1000 of iTunes gift cards

They got out of them that it was for the ATO and apparently took awhile to convince the purchaser it was a scam.

Good on the Coles staff members, I say.

So can you or can't you pay tax debt with iTunes cards?

        • Coles is pushing it really hard (to TMs) but also over Coles Radio about scammers and gift cards. Must be happening a fair bit

          @upsidedownlemon:

My local target has a poster near the gift cards to wan people about the scams. 👍🏻

        • @YellowDieselGolf:

          Nice.

I love the fact they just do it and don’t shout from the hills that they’re saving people money. Come see across as a lot more sincere compared to some of their other projects.

Just watch next week there will be thread asking

Help what can I do ater get scammed?

buying off gumtree is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced.

I've bought/ sold a few but the effort to ensure it's safe is a pain in the ass.

your conditions have to be in person transaction, gift cards can't be scratched, then you must be allowed to scratch them and check balances in person before you hand over cash.

if the cards are pre scratched, dont buy them

if you can't meet in person, don't buy it

at least on OzB you at least can check people's post history/ credibility

gumtree is a wildcard with more fakes than real

Ultimate Teens GCs in Woolies on sale, can be used in JB Hi-Fi,effectively 15% off.I bet legit Gumtree sellers can not beat this.

Don't expect more than 20% off.

    • +1

Can you stack with discounted Woolies e-gift card?

      • This would be a pretty serious discount if available.

  • +2

Ask them how they came to possess the gift cards (or any goods for sale online) . See if their story checks out.
for example, if they say it was a birthday present, ask when their bday was , check ID.
Also, if its a small amount and you go to their house and/or sight ID showing their address, I would expect they would be less likely to rip you off a small, since you know where they live. A larger amount, maybe they wouldn't care.
Better off waiting for some deal on gift cards and buy them yourself, as the risk vs reward from buying from a stranger instead of from a proper store, it is really not worth it .

    • Its all too hard

    • If the value is over $10,000, take it for free and make them convince you to give it back.

    • almost like real detective advise….

Buying gift cars off gumtree is a really bad idea.

Even the cards work when you buy them they might keep the numbers then run the cards through later.

    • So you use the giftcards to buy new giftcards. ;)

  • You know that it’s a scammers paradise, yet you still want to roll the dice.

How not to get scammed? Buy JB Hifi gift cards from JB Hifi.

    • "roll the dice"

      life is a gamble.

      no gamble no fun.

      gotta keep the adrenaline flowing

  • Why do you even need jb hifi gift cards ?

    • its wayyy tooo personal question

I never understand why people need to buy gift card ?

    • because they want to gift that card to someone else. hence the name. gift card

    • I never understand why people need to buy gift card ?

only useful if you can get them at a discount. buying gift cards to give as gifts is silly to me
