New PC Build: Comments and Feedback

Hello, my current 8 year old pc is starting to play up a bit. It still does very well for its age (intel i7 980x) however every now and then it hangs/crashes. I thought maybe its time for an upgrade, so i spent a few hours researching what to buy and came up with the below list.

  • i will keep my current hdd's (samsung ssd) and video card (asus gtx 970) for now.
  • it will be a gaming/netflix pc. i also consider it being quiet high on my list of priorities.
  • want to future proof to some extent so i will get another 8 years out of it!

I think i researched the rig fairly well, the only thing i didnt fully understand the differences between were the ram, so i chose based on price, and i read that its better to have two 8gb sticks than one 16gb. if you see anything that might not work, please let me know!

cpu
8th gen intel i5 8600k $359

cpu fan
Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU Cooler $48

motherboard
ASRock Z370 Killer $179

  • Don't think you can put a bluray drive in that case.

You don't need a bluray these days anyway. You will be downloading games off steam etc and streaming Netflix.

    Save yourself the cash here.

    Looks good otherwise.

What's the source of your prices, some seem a little high?

do you really need a blu ray drive?

  • More to the point, do you need a bluray burner? Surely just a reader will be fine and shave off $50

  • . i noticed later that most cases now dont have optical drive bays at all. the reason that i still want one is that, occasionally, something will come on a physical disk. eg: i bought final fantasy pc version and even though its just a steam code, you need to insert the cd to get this code. if i didnt have a cd drive, i would have had to get a hold of another pc with a cd drive, which would just be an annoying process. i chose the Silverstone Redline RL06 as it has good cooling so i might just have to compromise on the optical drive.

. source of prices is scorptec, a chain of pc shops in melbourne eastern suburbs. sometimes their prices can be a little bit higher than say msy, however they have a nice website which shows pictures and details of products. i then entered all products into staticice to see if msy was any cheaper. over the course of the entire build msy worked out to be $19 cheaper. Are there any products i listed which are significantly cheaper elsewhere?

. the bluray drive: on scorptecs website in the optical drives > bluray player section, $89 is the cheapest one they have, similar prices on msy. $50 will only get me a dvd drive, not bluray unfortunately.

    • Can you check for codes at work or a usb disc drive?

I'd personally give the additional case fans and cpu cooler a miss unless you're happy spending the dough.

I could get access to a cd drive somewhere, but like i said, it would just be an annoying process. if i purchased a game on say a friday night, only to find out its got a cd, then i would have to go to work, load the disk, find the key, or go to a friends house etc etc. i might get a cheap 2nd hand external disk drive just as a backup.

the i5 8600k doesnt come with a heatsink or fan, so the purchase is out of necessity.

The top mount fans, as i mentioned, i just want something i can build now and forget for years to come, so i might as well spend an extra $30 for "peace of mind" in regards to cooling.

    • Silverstone RL-06 does not have 5 inch bays for optical drive. https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?area=en&pid=726

the front of the case has no opening, it's just plain mesh.

New cases like that, including the Fractal Design Meshify C, CM Masterbox, Corsair Carbide 275 etc nowadays don't have ODD bays and are designed so that they have multiple fans at the front for maximum intake airflow.

If you ask me though, I greatly prefer a case like that because it looks much cleaner and has a better thermal design overall.

    • but are you really going to pay 90$ for convenience?

      • For the external cd drive? I'm assuming a 2ng hand one won't be that expensive!

Good build, will last a long time. IMO better to get good quality parts while your at it if your buying a new pc. No point cheaping out if you intend to use it daily.

    • Thanks. could you (or someone) shed some more light on the RAM side of things? thats the only part im not 100% sure about

i chose the ram based on its pretty much the cheapest option in the 2 x 8gb slot range. now it doesnt necessarily have to be 2 x 8gb…

i read some articles on ram and they mentioned that the mhz frequency is overrated in terms of purely picking ram based on this fact, that its better to have 2 x slots than 1 for more bandwidth

For the same RAM running 2x8GB is slightly faster than 1x16GB, around 1% in games (so unnoticeable). Using 2 sticks allows "dual channel" mode to be used provided the sticks are in the same colour slots on your motherboard.

It makes sense to use two but if, for the same RAM, 1x16GB was significantly cheaper than 2x8GB I'd go for that as spending more money like that doesn't get very much additional performance.

I would choose 1 stick with higher speed over 2 slower RAM sticks.

Unfortunately RAM is very expensive ATM which is unavoidable. If you have a way to get cheaper slow RAM 8GB it might be better to use that and wait until prices drop but you'll probably just have to bite the bullet. Using 8GB vs 16GB makes almost no difference to game performance and you can add more later when it's cheaper.

        • i just had a look and 1 X 16gb stick is roughly $20 cheaper than 2 X 8gb sticks

also based on past experience, mix and matching ram doesnt always end well. if i were to buy an 8gb stick now, and then another 8gb stick in a few years time if required, this might be risky as there could be a mis match. i would then have to try and hunt down an exact copy of my now "old" ram stick, or just go out and buy 2 new ram sticks. as mentioned, i really want to future proof this setup, just set it up once, set it up right and then i dont have to really worry about it. i would rather spend the $20 extra now for piece of mind.

and whats the go with ram prices as you mentioned, is there some supply and demand issues, or just artificial price inflation?

video card: ill keep the current asus 4gb gtx 970 i currently have as i can play most games at 1920 x 1080 on nearly maximum settings with my current pc setup

ive also done some more research on "push vs pull" fan setups this morning and now ive got more decisions to make!

  • Do you want to add a graphics card for gaming? Most of the new titles can't run off onboard graphics

    • OP has an old 970 that they'll keep using

  • Nobody builds with a drink holder anymore.
