The Good Guys Gold Service Extras

Any feedback on Goodguys' Gold Service Extras?

Basically it's an extended warranty (insurance), but with a rebate. For example, it's something like $200 for 2 extra years of cover for something worth around $1000. During that time you will receive codes (store credits) periodically that add up to $300, essentially free extra warranty and getting $100 back.

Apparently there's no spend limit on the store credits, so you don't need to spend more to use credit. Then again, the purchases will be limited to smaller items, such as small appliances and things like batteries.

On paper the Gold Service Extra looks like an okay deal, but would like to hear your thoughts.

  • Do the codes expire ? I assume they don't.

  • If you were going to get the extra warranty anyway its probably worth it. Good marketing as they would still be making money through the extra store sale. Just buy when they have sales. Are there any use by dates on the store credits? That would make it less attractive. Getting a credit and then having to buys something to use it before a short expiry date. Also they would be working off you not using the credit as well. The idea is to get the extra cash out of your for the extra warranty, but generally for a $1k item you would think your covered under consumer law for over 12mth or more. You just usually have to battle getting it fixed out of warranty.

    • Thanks, looks quite restrictive.

      • I purchased the Gold option with my new washing machine - but deliberately didn't factor in the coupons to the cost calculation. Haven't managed to use a single one yet.

    • The five day validity is sometimes shorter… had this happen to me the other day where I didn't get a chance to visit a store. Oh well.
