Does It Seem That There Are Too Many Loud/Modified Vehicles to You?

Seems there are a lot of vehicles that are modified to increase their loudness A LOT out there.

Should be more enforcement - after 3 infringements they should have their cars crushed.

Not a problem if they do it 'out of town/suburbs' or at some 'track'.

I haven't felt that it's been a steady climb, but I have definitely seen a ****ing rapid climb of idiots with blinding headlights on, sometimes I can't tell if it's just modern headlights or high beams on, but I swear to god these people who have them on should be taken off the roads for at least 3 years. It's time like these where I wish I had some mirror gadgets where I can reflect it back into these (profanity) face.

    • I think it is just new cars with HID headlights on SUVs, but it only affects people that are driving sedans etc (i.e. low vehicles). I say this because I notice it when driving our Subaru, but I do not notice it when I drive our Nissan SUV. It seems like they have high-beams, but it actually is just really bright standard lights that only annoy you if you are not driving an SUV.

      • Is your car lowered or a low sedan by any chance? I used to drive old japanese cars, and they were pretty low - Celica, old Mazda 323. What was happening was that my rear view mirror was below a lot of the low beam cut-offs - happens too easily with SUV's on the road. Even regular halogen bulbs will be blinding when you're directly in the low beam zone.

        • No it's stock as a rock. Child transport appliance.

      • Yep i drive a relatively low coupe and its a lot of the newer suvs. Its the rising climb of suvs on our roads argh.

I just got back from a 2 week work trip in Geelong and I've lost count the number of loud af Falcons and Commodores that I came across…

  • I don't mind high pitch rev noise, that's classy.
    But loud tractor-like noise I can't stand…

Tractor should stay in the farm, not in the city!!!

Those DSG gearbox cars that make a noise during shifting weren't around 20 years ago. It seems popular to get lift off crackles and bangs from both manual and autoboxes these days too, perhaps that is what the OP is referring to.

I think there is a generally accepted tolerance a fairbrained human being has for noise from a car. Anything above that tolerance, especially in residential areas, is justifiably frowned upon and I agree steps should be taken to rectify those vehicles that have noise above such tolerance.

I love dsg farts, but the ones you're talking about are people who have loaded a different map to their car to make the pops and cracks more prominent (known as a crackle map)

Admittedly i'm in my late 30s but i hate the young dbags who buy 15 year old versions of my car and load a crackle map, tilty wheels, blow off valves and tint their headlights and tailights black. Tarnishes the whole scene

      • how?

Maybe you should turn your hearing aid down?

  • +3

Smokers with their windows down are far more offensive.

The comments starting to look like the battle of the generations, but which generation caused the most problems? I am in the younger gen so I'll start - older gen cause overpriced houses, much of religious problems the world has today, divide between high & low salaries. Less obvious things I should mention gun issues, the inequalities due to hate from older times, the cold/trade war still dividing the world today.. Maybe I shouldn't say but the bad smoking/drinking culture still polluting our atmosphere..

  • Do you mean old cars? A lot of the louder cars on the road, are now usually from the factory. Starting from the late 00s, there have been more and more cars that are just louder from factory. From the Golf R32s, GTIs, Audi S3s, RS3s, even the HSVs and Mustangs are getting louder.

The HSV GTS and Mustang on my street wakes me up every now and then, my Cooper S JCW Gen 1 crackles and pops from the factory.

I've seen less shitty lancer and mirages or civics with fart cannons these days.

If it’s too loud, you’re too old! ;)

  • +5

Did you just turn 30 by any chance?

Cars are louder than they used to be
    Kids are disrespectful these days
Music on the radio is just noise

    • A 1 day hangover turns into a week lol

    • I just noticed the cars now.
I only realised kids are disrespectful because I now have them.
      Music is good though.

  • skylines with the anti lag, feels like a time warp when i past these fools

I've found bikes with modified exhausts to be much worse and annoying.

  • +1

I can't stand the dirt-bikes, they can be incredibly loud

  • I miss my WRX with it’s dump valve…

  • Have you ever noticed when travelling in some countries there are almost no loud cars with 'doof doof' playing, lucky them.

  • +1

Cars can be loud but compared to bikes I find thats more annoying !!

  • +1

The problem is motorcycles mate, if they all sounded like Ferraris I'd be less of a problem, but they all sound like shit.

  • those idiots with cars and motorbikes louder than a boeing 747 engine should be shot. sorry but i can't stand that crap.

"Look at me, i have a very loud engine and I am super cool becuase of it" is what i get from those idiots.

    Quiet down please

Captial punishment for loud vehicles… Well, that escalated quickly. :D

Like you don't do anything that's annoying to other people…

How about the death penalty for over-reactors??

    • I suppose there is that element - something that has a real reason for some but has dwindled to form over function for others. Like wings on cars that will never be justified. The original and still mostly current reason for noise is performance.

      • How much performance do you need on Australian roads, given our speed limits? It is great you can get to 100 mph in a short time; but there are very few places you are legally allowed to do that and I can't see most of those "performance" cars straying far from the city. They are, usually, "shouty" cars for "shouty" people. If you "shout" out in the middle of nowhere I have no problems at all, if you run yourself into a tree and don't take out anyone else whilst speeding - the care factor goes up just a little.

        • Performance is never a "need", it's a passion. What you're passionate about isn't necessarily what I'm passionate about. I'm not into performance cars - I prefer utility and versatility. But I understand passions :)

        • +3

@poohduck: I understand passion as well; however, I would not let my passion disturb the neighbours - whatever form it took :)

Too many vehicles period; not enough bicycles

    • +1

You know what else is loud and annoying? This

  • +2

I'm more annoyed by people fitting LED lights as H4/H7 replacements into reflector fittings. Sprays intense glare right into oncoming traffic, and is especially annoying when people retrofit old 4WDs. The fittings are of course illegal, but stores get around this by selling them stating 'for off road use only/not legal on road' in small writing on the box, while touting the massive brightness in the advertising spiel.

    • Yes - I hate that too. It's arrogant and dangerous - much more anti social than loud cars. Same as tailgating - it's unnecessarily dangerous, and more dangerous to the person being tailgated.

I hear them a fair amount late at night in my area, but it's high end cars being thrashed!

There's a lot of rich kids in my area and whilst it took me a lifetime to get my AMG, these kids seem to all have a Merc or BMW as their second car when they're not being a menace in their Lambo or Ferrari. These parents are morons. Imagine these kids at 40! They'll be Nick Kyrgios on 11!

Re headlights, of course, mine has auto-adjusting HID, but I also noticed when I bought my car that the rear view mirror adjusts it's "tint" at night which stops the issue of being blinded by light behind me.

Other than the above, I only ever notice the odd Commodore with a super-loud exhaust, looking stupid and being driven by some moron looking to kill a family in a head on collision. The sooner these pieces of junk are off the road, the better. They seem to attract the worst drivers.

  • I dont mind loud cars that are performance cars that are actually fast cars. Gtfo with your loud shitbox.

Far less now compared to late 90s/mid 00s.

Growing up in Western Sydney (Parramatta/Granville/Guildford), it was normal. Church street on a Thursday night would be hell for people going out for dinner or drinks. But they’d love to look at the cars.

Friday/Saturday nights along George street in the city to the main strip of the Cross was like a car show.

    Mannn I miss those days.

  • yes, as population grows….. just common sense….

  • +2

I do rwc inspections. As a general rule, the "loud, modified" cars are in far better and safer condition than the general family wagons. The number of standard cars I've seen with baby seats and bald tyres/brakes on metal is very scary.

    • -1

Hoons learn how to pass RWC, nothing new. Noise has nothing to do with safety anyway, you just let the noisemakers continue their ways as you don't have any say in what is unsafe noise pollution.

      • I think what brendanm is getting at is that someone who owns a modified car is more than likely going to look after it more when it comes to safety.

        • Correct. They actually care about their cars, and are generally happy to spend money on them to keep them in good condition. Lots of time the average person sees a car as a mode of transport only and is loathe to spend money on it, even for basic safety items.

        • @brendanm:

As a fellow mechanic, I can confirm. We don’t do RWC, but do a lot of mechanical work, and of all the cars that come in, of the noisy ones, nearly all of them are well kept and the people who own them usually throw money at them. “Yes mate, what ever it needs”

Where the quiet “mummy cars” that come in look ok, but have missed the last 3 services, no tread, oil leaks, worn out brakes, mechanical issues. These cars usually end up with us because they have failed their RWC. The worst part is, even the overly rich “soccer mom” types want to spend the least amount as possible when you tell them what it needs…
